There is disclosed a process for hydroformylation of carbon black. The carbon black is hydroformylated by reacting carbon black with carbon monoxide and hydrogen under hydroformylation conditions in the presence of a hydroformylation catalyst and organic reaction solvent. Addition of the hydroformylated carbon black enhances the rates of cure of sulfur vulcanizable rubber.

There is disclosed a process for enhancing the rate of cure of a sulfur vulcanizable rubber. Addition of a hydroformylated rubber to a sulfur vulcanizable rubber enhances the rate of cure and concomitantly improves the rubber/filler interaction of the vulcanized rubber.

A coloring agent, preferably metallic particles, is disposed in a solution that contains unvulcanized diene rubber(s) and a rubber vulcanization accelerator. Crosslinkable silicone and/or modified EPDM may also be disposed in the solution. The coating material is substantially free of free sulfur, and preferably is also substantially free of carbon black. The accelerator scavenges sulfur from a vulcanized rubber substrate to auto-vulcanize the rubber solids, and any crosslinkable silicone and/or modified EPDM present. Coating material for use on sulfur vulcanized rubber

A method of preparing a composite of polyurethane bonded to the surface of a cured rubber substrate and the resulting composite. The method is comprised of first applying to a cleaned, cured rubber surface a coating of methylmethacrylate-natural rubber graft polymer and then applying a liquid polyurethane reaction mixture which is cured to form the resultant composite. The invention is particularly directed to the preparation of a tire comprised of a polyurethane carcass applied to a cured rubber tread and to a tire comprised of a polyurethane tread applied to a cured rubber carcass.
