A method for resolving an oil-and-water emulsion is disclosed. The method comprises adding to the emulsion (1) if the emulsion does not contain a desirably high concentration of polyvalent metal cations of at least one part per million by weight, an amount of polyvalent metal cations sufficient to result in the desirably polyvalent metal cation concentration in the emulsion, and (2) an effective demulsifying amount of a combination of a terminating agent that is either a non-emulsifying hydrotrope composition or a coupling agent, and a composition comprising a polydithiocarbamate compound comprising at least two groups represented by the formula --(OR.sup.1).sub.X NHC(:S)SR.sup.2, wherein R.sup.1 represents an alkylene group of 1 to 30 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 represents an alkali or alkaline earth metal group or an ammonium group; and x represents an integer of from 1 to about 250 independently selected for each of such groups such that the total of the integers x is, on average, from 3 to about 250. Related compositions are also disclosed.

Oil well production fluid composed of oil and water and containing in excess of 100 ppm water soluble petroleum carboxylates in anionic form dissolved in the water is treated by acidifying the fluid to a pH of 6.0 or lower with a combination of a strong organic acid and a strong mineral acid and then is intimately mixed. The oil and water are separated one from the other. The content of the water soluble organics in the water is thereby substantially transferred to the oil phase. In a second aspect of the invention, water used to extract corrosive compounds to render the oil suitable for fueling gas turbine power plants is acidified to a pH of 6.0 or lower and is thereafter intimately mixed with fuel oil.

A method for removal of water soluble organics from acidified oil process water is disclosed. The method comprises a step in which free oil is removed from such water by water-wet ultrafiltration to produce a water-rich filtrate stream which is then directed through a reverse osmosis membrane to produce a WSO-depleted stream and a WSO-rich reject stream. The method includes a recycle stream.

A method for resolving emulsions produced in preparation of pharmaceuticals by fermentation and in other such bioprocesses is disclosed. The method comprises adding an effective amount of a demulsifier to an emulsion containing fermentation product that includes a pharmaceutical which is desired to be extracted from the emulsion. The demulsifier comprises a nitrogen composition that is selected from among certain quaternized and unquaternized polyoxyalkylated amines, their conjugate acid salts, quaternized and unquaternized condensation product formed by heating an oxyalkylated amine under dehydration condensation conditions to product a polyoxyalkylated amine of molecular weight of at least 400, conjugate acid salts thereof, quaternized and unquaternized copolymers of an epihalohydrin and an amine selected from the group consisting of lower aliphatic primary amines having from two to about eight carbon atoms and lower aliphatic secondary amines having from two to about eight carbon atoms, polydialkyldiallyl ammonium salts, polymers of acrolamido alkylene quaternary ammonium salts, and mixtures thereof.

This invention relates to salts of oxyalkylated amino compounds which render normally water insoluble components such as biocides, soluble in water and thereby improving their usefulness and effectiveness. These amino compounds render biocides such as methylene bis(thiocyanate) (MBT) and/or bis(trichloromethyl) sulfone (BTMS) water soluble. The soluble forms of these biocides afford more predictable, consistent and effective biocidal results when applied to systems contaminated with microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, algae, molds, and certain yeasts and thus offer considerable advantages over insoluble, dispersible, emulsified forms of these biocides.
