Provided is an actuator, preferably a linear actuator, including a carriage having a lateral support surface for supporting a first longitudinal section of a belt against lateral deflection and a space adjacent to and longitudinally offset from the lateral support surface for partially surrounding a second longitudinal section of the belt that is deflected relative to the lateral support surface to take up slack and/or tension the belt. By containing the slack within the carriage using the space and the lateral support surface, slack may be removed from the belt or the belt may be tensioned in an easy and cost efficient manner.

A window positioning apparatus for a vehicle comprising a window panel, a frame in which the window panel is guided between a closed position closing a window opening in the frame and an open position opening the window opening, and a multi-stage telescoping screw actuator mechanism connected between the window panel and the frame, the actuator mechanism being extendible to move the window panel from its open position to its closed position and collapsible to move the window panel from its closed position to its open position. The multi-stage telescoping screw actuator mechanism includes a plurality of screw members of progressively decreasing diameter respectively telescopically disposed within a next adjacent screw member of larger diameter. The plurality of screw members includes a first stage screw member that is rotatably supported and axially constrained in a housing fixed with respect to the frame, a last stage screw member attached to the window panel, and at least one intermediate stage screw member, and each intermediate stage screw member has internal and external threads respectively for engaging external and internal threads on next adjacent screw members, such that rotation of the first stage screw member in a first direction relative to the last stage screw member will cause the intermediate and last stage screw members to extend telescopically along an extension axis from the first stage screw member and rotation in a second direction opposite the first direction will cause the intermediate and last stage screw members to telescopically retract.

A package assembly formed from two detachably connectable package modules is provided for separately packaging a plurality of articles, such as machine tool cutting inserts. Each package module is substantially structurally identical to the other module, and comprises a tray having a top portion, a bottom wall, side walls, and a plurality of spaced-apart interior walls that define a plurality of article-holding chambers, a transparent lid slidably mounted on the top portion of the tray for retaining, displaying, and sequentially dispensing articles disposed in the article-holding chamber of the tray. Each tray further comprises a cantilevered lip on the exterior of the tray for releasably interconnecting the side walls of the trays of two different package modules such that the bottom wall of the tray of one module and the transparent lid of the other module face the same direction. A label concerning the nature of the articles may be applied to the bottom wall of the tray or to the lid of each module. When the label is applied to the bottom wall, the horizontal interconnection provided by the cantilevered lips on the modules allows the user of the articles to advantageously see not only the articles themselves through the transparent lid of one module, but the printed information on the label of another module at the same time. Additionally, the releasable interconnection provided by the cantilevered lip on each module allows the user to easily break the package assembly in half without compromising the packaging integrity of the inserts or other articles contained within the individual modules.

A tool is insertable in the narrow annular access space between the cylindrical core barrel and the thermal shield of a nuclear reactor for testing and removing a plug from a flow hole in the core barrel. The tool includes two hydraulically driven jaws which have gripping flanges receivable in a peripheral groove in the plug head for gripping same. The jaws are thin plate-like members and each carries two short pistons having a length less than the thickness of the jaws and hydraulically extendable into engagement with the core barrel for exerting on the jaws and the gripped plug a predetermined force in a plug-removing direction. The jaws are preferably substantially coplanar and carried by a flat arm with the plane of the jaws disposed at a slight angle to the plane of the arm, which angle is selectively variable. Means are provided for pivotally moving the arm about an axis substantially parallel to the axis of the plug.
