A process for increasing the bulk density of an aerated powder is provided. The powder is placed in a container. The container is then closed and the gas pressure within the container is increased to a level above atmospheric pressure and at a rate sufficient to cause the powder to compact before a substantial portion of said pressurization gas diffuses into said powder. In one embodiment, the process is utilized to increase the bulk density of an aerated, free-flowing titanium dioxide pigment. Apparatus for carrying out the process is also provided.

Improved methods for producing titanium dioxide slurries. The output from a micronizer is passed through a condenser to condense the steam and form an aqueous slurry of titanium dioxide, which can in most cases then be further concentrated as desired or which can be sold or used without further concentration, instead of passing the micronizer output to apparatus for separating the TiO2 from the steam, as is currently practiced in the art. The resultant slurry from the condenser is in a further refinement preferably sent to an agitated storage tank together with dispersant and anti-settling compounds to aid in preventing settling of the titanium dioxide solids out of the slurry. To help facilitate condensation of the steam/pigment mixture sent to the condenser, a portion of the condensed slurry is in yet a further refinement pumped from the slurry storage tank to a heat exchanger. The output from the heat exchanger is then fed to the condenser to facilitate the condensing of the steam in the condenser. The temperature and volume (flow) of cooled condensate to the condenser are set to match the amount of steam and its temperature so as to ensure that substantially all of the steam and contained pigment are collected from the condenser.

Titanium dioxide slurries

Pigmentary titanium dioxide having a high durability when used in paint or the like exposed to solar radiation and methods of producing such pigmentary titanium dioxide are provided. The durable pigmentary titanium dioxide of the invention is comprised of rutile titanium dioxide particles having cerium oxide and dense amorphous silica deposited thereon. The particles preferably also have an outer coating of hydrous alumina deposited thereon.

Durable pigmentary titanium dioxide and methods of producing the same

A method for milling a powder in a high energy mill which includes steps of forming a milling slurry including a naturally occurring zirconium silicate sand grinding medium having a density in the range of from about 4 g/cc absolute to about 6 g/cc absolute. Also provided is a grinding medium including naturally occurring zirconium silicate sand characterized by a density in the range of from about 4 g/cc absolute to about 6 g/cc absolute.

The present invention provides a pigmentary titanium composite having good durability and excellent optical properties. The inventive composite consists essentially of: a particulate titanium dioxide base; a hydrous zirconium oxide layer deposited on the titanium dioxide base; and a hydrous alumina layer deposited on the hydrous zirconium oxide layer. The alumina layer consists essentially of boehmite alumina and/or pseudoboehmite alumina. The present invention also provides a method for preparing the inventive pigmentary composite. The inventive method comprises the steps of: (a) preparing an aqueous slurry comprising water and a particulate titanium dioxide base; (b) depositing a layer of a hydrous zirconium oxide precipitate on the titanium dioxide base; and (c) depositing a layer of a hydrous alumina precipitate on the layer of hydrous zirconium oxide. The hydrous alumina precipitate consists essentially of boehmite alumina and/or pseudoboehmite alumina.

Titanium dioxide pigment and method of preparation

The invention relates to a method for the preparation of particulate pigmentary titanium dioxide. The method comprises reacting, in solution, a precursor titanium tetrahalide with sulfuric acid to produce an intermediate titanyl sulfate product. Following crystallization and recovery of this intermediate product from solution the crystallized intermediate is redissolved in an aqueous solvent medium and hydrolyzed at elevated temperatures to provide a particulate amorphous titanium dioxide intermediate product. After separation from the aqueous solvent medium, this intermediate product then is subjected to calcination at elevated temperatures to produce the desired particulate titanium dioxide end product.

Method for producing particulate titanium oxides

Chemically inert pigmentary zinc oxide compositions, useful in producing UV light stable polymeric resin compositions are prepared by wet treatment of chemically reactive zinc oxide base pigments utilizing a process wherein chemically inert organic or inorganic coatings are deposited thereon.
