A diesel engine includes at least one cylinder () with a piston () having a piston bowl (). A fuel injector () is configured to direct a fuel spray towards a target area () on an annular wall section () of the piston bowl so as to make a flame () formed by ignition of the fuel spray hit the target area. The target area borders, via a flow separation edge (), on a lowered flow separation area () on the annular wall section so as to give this annular wall section a stepped configuration. The flow separation edge and flow separation area are configured to induce the formation of a vortex-filled wake between the flame and the flow separation area on the downstream side of the flow separation edge when the flame flows from the target area, across the flow separation edge and over the flow separation area.

Diesel engine, motor vehicle and method for reducing heat transfer to a piston of a cylinder of a diesel engine

A motor vehicle includes a cab unit () tiltable relative to a vehicle frame () between a lowered state and a raised state. A first circuit () on the vehicle frame circulates a first medium. A second circuit () in the cab unit circulates a second medium. A heat transfer arrangement () transfers heat between the media. The arrangement includes a first heat transfer unit () on the vehicle frame, and in the first circuit and the first medium flows through it, and a second heat transfer unit () on the cab unit and in the second circuit and the second medium flows through it. These heat transfer units () are in heat-transferring contact when the cab unit is in the lowered state and are separated when the cab unit is in the raised state.
