A process of producing iron from fine-grained iron ore by direct reduction, which includes adding oxygen, sponge iron and at least one of coal fines and low-temperature carbonized coal to an iron bath in a melt gasifier to produce a reducing gas, regulating the temperature of the reducing gas by blowing coal fines into it to produce a cooled reducing gas and a low-temperature carbonized coal, separating the low-temperature carbonized coal from the cooled reducing gas in order to use the separated low-temperature carbonized coal in the melt gasifier, preheating a fine-grained iron ore with a used reducing gas containing carbon monoxide to a temperature from 450.degree. to 700.degree. C., and reducing the preheated fine-grained iron ore with the cooled reducing gas at a temperature from 700.degree. to 1100.degree. C. in at least one fluidized bed to produce sponge iron and used reducing gas containing carbon monoxide, wherein the step of preheating the fine-grained iron ore results in decomposition of at least part of the carbon monoxide contained in the used reducing gas, producing a carbon layer on the preheated fine-grained iron ore, and also producing an exhaust gas and additional heat.

Process for producing iron from fine-grained iron ores

A method and apparatus for the continuous melting of an iron-containing material in a melting device, the melting device being composed of a vertical shaft having a central axis, a melting furnace disposed below, and communicating with, the shaft, the melting furnace being asymmetrical to the central axis and being formed to have a region which is furthest removed from the central axis, at least one first nozzle opening into the furnace, located in the vicinity of the furnace bottom in the region furthest removed from the central axis, and at least two second nozzles opening into the furnace and located above the furnace bottom. Melting is effected by: introducing iron-containing material into the shaft for causing the material to descend through the shaft; supplying carbon carrier and oxygen to the nozzles for effecting partial combustion of the carbon carrier in the furnace to generate heat which is supplied to the material to form a bath of molten material in the furnace and to generate partially combusted exhaust gas; effecting a selected distribution of the carbon carrier and oxygen to the nozzles for causing the combustion arising from the first nozzle to supply superheating heat below the surface of the bath and the combustion arising from the second nozzles to supply heat for melting material located above the surface of the bath; and effecting post combustion of the partially combusted exhaust gas in the shaft for preheating material in the shaft.

Method and apparatus for the continuous melting of scrap

A process for the production of ferrochromium from iron-containing chromium ores, in which the reduction of the ore, which is mixed with coal and slag-forming constituents, is conducted in a rotary kiln at 1480.degree. to 1580.degree. C. in the presence of a CO-containing atmosphere from 20 to 240 minutes, and in which melting follows in a melting furnace at 1600.degree. to 1700.degree. C. By this process, the greatest part of the gangue of the ore can be separated off before melting the reduced ore.

Process for the production of ferrochromium

A process for the production of ferromanganese from iron-containing manganese ores, in which the reduction of the ore, which is mixed with coal and slag-forming constituents, is conducted in a rotary kiln at 1200.degree. to 1350.degree. C. in the presence of a CO-containing atmosphere for 20 to 240 minutes, and in which melting follows in a melting furnace at 1400.degree. to 1600.degree. C. By this process, the greatest part of the gangue of manganese ore can be separated off before melting the reduced ore.

Process for the production of ferromanganese

To produce steel sheet cross sections, particularly those having a small thickness down to a lower limit of about 30 mm and a width of about 500 to 1500 mm, with high surface quality and at a high casting rate (about 10 m/min) at relatively low expense in continuous casting molds equipped with comoving mold walls defining a casting cross section or cavity, a tubular casting nozzle having a mouthpiece whose width at its exit cross section is less than 50% of the width of the casting cavity is utilized, and the space between the sidewalls of the mouthpiece and the adjacent lateral dams or sidewalls of the casting cavity is bridged by means of two symmetrically oriented rotating wheels provided with ceramic rims. The wheels are of a size such that they simultaneously form a seal together with the mouthpiece and the respective, oppositely disposed lateral dams and casting belts defining the casting cavity.

A continuous steel casting apparatus includes a casting nozzle, a mold surrounding the casting nozzle and having moving mold walls together defining a rectangular casting cross section and being formed of oppositely located, parallel-extending endless casting belts and oppositely located, parallel-extending endless lateral dams. A sealing assembly provides a seal between the casting nozzle and the mold walls. The sealing assembly includes sealing levers situated between the casting nozzle and the casting belts. The sealing levers are movably mounted on the casting nozzle. Each sealing lever has a sealing face oriented towards a respective casting belt and extending parallel to the width thereof. Further, each sealing lever is resiliently urged into a sealing engagement with the casting belts. Side surfaces of the sealing levers sealingly engage the dams.
