A camera producing visible light images with thermal data. The camera may include visible light lens and sensor, an infrared light lens and sensor, and a display. The display displays some of the visible light image and thermal data from the respective sensors. The visible light image is divided into an array of zones where each zone may provide thermal data associated with the corresponding portion of the target shown in the zone. The camera may sense infrared images also provide audible alarms where the alarm is emitted with a tone of variable output to indicate the relative level of the alarm.

Methods and apparatus for monitoring a temperature of an object over time using a thermal imaging camera. The methods and apparatus may gather infrared temperature data from a selected source of temperature data within a scene at a selected time interval and display a graphical plot of the gathered temperature data on a digital display.

A system for producing thermal images acquires at least first and second thermal images comprising a plurality of pixels and a first and second dynamic range, respectively. The second dynamic range is such that its upper limit is higher than that of the first, and at least partially overlaps the first. A final thermal image is created comprising pixels from the first thermal image that are not saturated or nearly saturated with respect to the first dynamic range, and pixels from the second thermal image that are saturated or nearly saturated with respect to the first dynamic range. The resulting final image generally comprises both a large dynamic range and high signal-to-noise ratio.

Animation of a thermal image captured by a thermal imager that includes automatically changing particular aspects of the presentation of the image. The coloring of the thermal image may automatically change through two or more color presentations. The colors which may automatically change or be 'animated' may be any colors in the usual rainbow of color or in the grayscale. The animation may include a series of small, stepwise incremental changes that gradually change the image. If timed correctly and if the increments are sufficiently small, the transitions of the image may appear smooth, in the manner of a movie or cartoon.

A thermal imaging camera may include an electronic compass that can be calibrated after assembly of the thermal imaging camera. The electronic compass may include a magnetic sensor configured to sense three orthogonal components of a magnetic field. In some examples, the camera includes a processor configured to receive a plurality of measurements from the magnetic sensor as a physical orientation of the magnetic sensor is changed in a three-dimensional space. The processor may generate a plurality of data points from the plurality of measurements and control a display so as to display a simulated three-dimensional plot of the data points. The processor may control the display so the display updates in substantially real-time as new data points are generated by changing the physical orientation of the magnetic sensor.

A graphical user interface for configuring parameters associated with a portable infrared imager is provided. The interface can be used to manually or automatically set range and span parameters. The interface can also be used to configure one or more alarms to notify a user that a detected temperature is outside a predetermined range.

A graphical user interface for analyzing thermal images is provided. The interface can be used to identify the temperatures at multiple areas of interest defined on an image. The areas can be denoted by configurable markers of different predetermined shapes. In some embodiments, the interface simultaneously displays temperature statistics relating to the user-identified areas of interest.

In some embodiments, the imaging device can include an imaging engine, a memory device for storing image data, and a processor for receiving the image data from the imaging engine, storing the image data in the memory device, retrieving the image data from the memory device, and transmitting the image data to both a local display and remote display so that the image data can be viewed on both the remote display and local display simultaneously.

A portable noncontact thermometer comprising a housing defining an aperture for ingress of incident thermal energy in a field of view. A graphical display is fixed with respect to the housing. The thermometer further comprises a thermopile array including a plurality of thermopile elements positioned inside the housing so as to be impinged by the incident thermal energy. The thermometer further includes processing circuitry in electrical communication with the thermopile array. The processing circuitry is operative to produce on the graphical display a thermal image of the field of view. The processing circuitry is further operative to determine a temperature of a target location within the field of view based on electrical signals derived from a subset of the thermopile elements. The subset of thermopile elements may be a single thermopile element located approximately at a center of the thermopile array.
