A medical apparatus operable to induce localized hyperthermia in a patient via an electromagnetic field emitted by an antenna of an applicator connected to an output of the medical apparatus includes a signal generator, a bidirectional coupler, and a controller. The signal generator generates a radio frequency signal as a function of an operating parameter to a single cable to an applicator. The bidirectional coupler provides the radio frequency signal generated by the signal generator to the output and receives a reflected signal from the output at the applicator. First and second low pass filters isolate the radio frequency signal and reflected signal from a temperature sensing signal transmitted via the single cable to at least one temperature sensor of the applicator.

Single cable apparatus and method for hyperthermic treatments

A medical apparatus operable to induce localized hyperthermia in a patient via an electromagnetic field emitted by an antenna connected to an output of the medical apparatus includes a signal generator, a bidirectional coupler, and a controller. The signal generator generate radios frequency signal as a function of an operating parameter. The bidirectional coupler provides the radio frequency signal generated by the signal generator to the output and receives a reflected signal from the output. The controller receives the generated radio frequency signal from the signal generator, determines a power of the radiofrequency signal generated by the signal generator, receives the reflected signal from the bidirectional coupler, determines a power of the reflected signal, and determines delivery efficiency of the medical apparatus as a function of the power of the radiofrequency signal generated by the signal generator and the power of the reflected signal received from the bidirectional coupler.

Apparatus and method for hyperthermic treatments

Pixel clock and beam scan timing of an acousto-optic scanner are controlled by an acoustic velocity-driven, phase locked loop containing an adjustable voltage controlled pixel clock generator, which is controlled by a detector that produces delayed and attenuated replica of the excitation waveform applied to an ATWL scanner used to scan a light beam across a workpiece. In a first embodiment of the invention, an end-of-cell transducer converts the pressure induced traveling lens into an electrical signal replica of the excitation input. In a second embodiment, an end-of-scan optical pick-off monitor is employed to detect the scanned optical spot as it crosses its field of view. Each pixel is spatially invariant to propagation velocity changes in the ATWL medium, so that as variations in temperature change the speed of the pressure-induced lens traveling from the excitation transducer to the end of the ATWL cell on each scan, the pixel clock is correspondingly slowed down or speeded up by the same proportional amount, to maintain registration in time and space.

Timing control in acousto-optic scanner based on acoustic velocity of traveling wave lens

A linear force actuator system for stabilizing a support structure employs a linear dc motor whose primary winding is driven by a pulse width modulation control signal representative of a force input, through which the secondary member of the motor which acts as an inertial mass, is to be controllably translated. For improved control accuracy, the actuator system of the invention employs a pair of feedback loops, one of which monitors the current in the motor's primary winding to maintain a constant force output to the secondary member and a secondary of which monitors long term deviations from the center of the secondary member and corrects for centering offsets. An opto-electronic position sensing arrangement monitors the movement of the secondary member whereby precise control of commutation of the coils of the primary winding and a smooth translation of the secondary member are obtained.

Linear dc motor vibration controller

A byte of binary data to be stored is recorded as a synthetic Fourier transform hologram of the byte of data. A time varying control signal representing the synthetic hologram is used to intensity modulate a coherent light beam as the beam scans transversely across a photosensitive recording film. The amplitudes of different spatial frequencies in the data band are differently altered to compensate for signal to noise roll-off over the data band. The thus compensated signals are also modified to compensate for nonlinear gain characteristics. The thus modified signals are processed to provide the modulating control signal. During the readout process an inverse Fourier transformation is performed optically on the light diffracted by the synthetic hologram in order to produce the original byte of data in the form of an optical intensity pattern. This pattern is transversely distributed on an array of photosensitive detectors which converts the optical intensity pattern to an electrical data signal. During this readout process a tapered neutral density filter, i.e. a wedge filter, is employed in front of the photosensitive detectors to provide attenuation or gain across the spatial frequency bandwidth to compensate for system modulation transfer function.

Recording and reading synthetic holograms

A binary bit pattern is reconstructed from a block of analog signals corresponding to the number of known bit positions of the pattern being reconstructed. The analog signals, which may take the form of light intensity signals, vary in signal level with the binary level represented as well as with a characteristic which causes the signal levels of the analog signals to vary in a known manner as a function of bit position. In reconstructing the bit pattern, an output signal is developed having a value dependent upon that of at least one of the analog signals which has a known bit level reconstruction. This signal is used for providing a variable threshold having a value which varies in dependence upon the outut signal as modified by a modifying factor which varies in the known manner as a function of bit position. Bit decision circuitry includes a comparator for sequentially comparing the analog signals with the variable threshold to provide bit decision indications.
