Amorphous propylene-ethylene copolymers are described herein that can include high amounts of ethylene and exhibit desirable softening points and needle penetrations. The desirable combinations of softening points and needle penetrations in these propylene-ethylene copolymers allow them to have a broad operating window. Due their broad operating window, the propylene-ethylene copolymers can be utilized in a wide array of applications and products, including hot melt adhesives.

A hot melt adhesive composition includes at least a semi-crystalline copolymer of propylene and a polyethylene wax having a Brookfield viscosity of about 20 cP to 500 cP at 140&#xb0; C., a density of about 0.95 g/cmto 0.99 g/cmbetween 23&#xb0; C. and 25&#xb0; C., and a Mettler drop point of about 110&#xb0; C. to 135&#xb0; C., wherein the composition is characterized by a effective set time of about 0.1 second to 5 seconds. Articles including the composition and methods of making articles including the composition are described.

Polyolefin based hot melt adhesive composition

A hot melt adhesive comprises an ethylene &#x3b1;-olefin copolymer, an acid anhydride modified polyolefin and a hydrogenated tackifying resin. The hot melt adhesive has excellent viscoelastic properties and can be used in a variety of applications. In one application, attaching an elastic band to a flexible film, the adhesive has excellent viscosity and, in a finished absorbent article, a minimal creep characteristic. Also disclosed is a disposable article using the adhesive to adhere adjacent surfaces within the disposable article including an elastic band to a polyolefin backing film, for example, in a diaper, incontinent article or other such structure.

Disposable article hot melt adhesive

Hot melt adhesive compositions which have enhanced adhesion to difficult substrates, particularly at refrigerator/freezer temperatures or at elevated temperatures. The inventive compositions require a base polymer comprising at least one metallocene ethylene-containing polymer or at least one non-metallocene, amorphous, propylene containing polymer; a tackifier; an optional wax; and an adhesion promoting additive comprising at least one semi-crystalline polymer having a weight average molecular weight of about 30,000 daltons or less. It has been found that the adhesion promoting additive of this invention enhances the adhesion properties of a hot melt adhesive composition having a metallocene ethylene-containing base polymer or non-metallocene, amorphous, propylene containing base polymer, particularly at elevated temperatures or at low refrigerator and freezer temperatures where other conventional adhesives have been unsuccessful.

Adhesion promotion to difficult substrates for hot melt adhesives

Disclosed are hot melt adhesive compositions comprising a metathesized unsaturated polyol ester wax. Typically, the metathesized unsaturated polyol ester wax is derived from renewable starting materials such as vegetable oils or animal fats. The metathesized unsaturated polyol ester wax typically replaces a portion or all of a petroleum-derived wax or synthetic wax in various hot melt adhesive compositions. The hot melt adhesives may be conventional hot melt adhesives or hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesives.

A novel spray-on adhesive composition is made from a high melt index polymer and a rosin ester tackifier that interact to produce a composition that can form a low VOC, non-tacky, hot melt adhesive material that can be used in disposable article manufacture. The adhesive provides surprisingly high initial adhesion. Additionally, the adhesive is thermally stable at hot melt application conditions, low in cost, easily applied, and produces high quality disposable articles.

We have found a novel spray-on adhesive composition made from components including a high melt index polymer and a high melt tackifier that interact to produce a composition that can form a low odor, light color, non-tacky, hot melt adhesive material that can be used in disposable article manufacture. The adhesive is thermally stable at hot melt application conditions, is low in cost, is easily applied and produces high quality disposable articles.

A hot melt label or other paper stock pick-up adhesive can be formulated using a hydrogenated tackifying resin combined with waxes, oils, stabilizers and other additive materials. Such a material has hot tack and other properties that produce excellent pick-up properties. The hot melt materials are hypoallergenic and are safe to use.
