A thermosetting size applyable to paper in a size press and curable at a temperature not in excess of about 280.degree. F. for 10 seconds is disclosed. This size comprises an aqueous emulsion comprising water having suspended therein aqueous emulsion copolymer particles of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers comprising hydroxy-functional monomer having an hydroxy number of at least about 20, and the balance of the monomers provides a water insoluble polymer having a glass transition temperature of from about -20.degree. C. to about 50.degree. C. The emulsion has a pH greater than about 2.5, preferably from 4.0 to 7.0, and a stoichiometric deficiency of an aminoplast cross-linking agent is used for cure. An acid curing catalyst is uniformly distributed in the size to speed the cure.

Thermosetting size press composition

A heat curable aqueous emulsion coating composition is disclosed which is adapted to deposit a release coating which stratifies to allow less silicone to effectively coat a given surface area. This emulsion comprises water containing: (1) a fatty acid or fatty alcohol-containing hydroxy-functional polyester having a hydroxy value of at least about 40 and which is a free flowing liquid at room temperature; (2) a cross-linking agent for said hydroxy resin; and (3) at least one silicone reactive with said hydroxy-functional resin and/or said cross-linking agent to provide a release function. The hydroxy-functional polyester and the cross-linking agent serve to emulsify the silicones in the aqueous phase of the emulsion.

Silicone release coating emulsions which stratify when baked

A heat curable coating composition which deposits a release coating containing a smaller proportion of silicone release material is disclosed. This composition comprises (1) an hydroxy-functional resin which is preferably a polyester resin; (2) a cross-linking agent for the polyester, such as an aminoplast resin; and (3) at least one and preferably a mixture of at least two reactive silicones which are preferably polysiloxanes. These two polysiloxanes comprise: (A) a hydrogen- or alkoxy-functional polysiloxane; and (B) an elastomeric polysiloxane reactive with the hydrogen- or alkoxy-functional polysiloxane to provide release properties. Either or both of the polysiloxanes are reactive with the hydroxy-functional resin or the cross-linking agent. Components (1), (2) and (3) are compatible in a liquid admixture which may contain a volatile inert organic solvent or which may be solvent-free. During the heat cure, the polysiloxanes in component (3) become incompatible with respect to the balance of the composition, and this causes stratification of the polysiloxanes to the surface of the cured coating when the composition is deposited upon a paper or plastic substrate and heated to cure the same. The hydroxy-functional resin and its cross-linking agent go to the paper surface and fill its porosities to minimize the amount of polysiloxane needed to provide the desired release properties.

Pigmented thermosetting organic solvent solution coating compositions are disclosed which cure to provide improved weather resistance. These coating compositions contain three resin components, as follows:

Siliconized polyether thermosetting coating compositions

Pigmented coating solutions are disclosed which deposit coatings possessing improved resistance to ultraviolet radiation-induced auto-oxidation. These solutions contain organic solvent, including aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, having dissolved therein an aromatic hydrocarbon-soluble, normally liquid, polysulfide or polydisulfide derivative having terminal -SH groups which have been reacted with a monofunctional reactant providing a C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl terminal group to provide an essentially nonreactive derivative. The solvent also has dissolved therein a polar polymeric binder (preferably thermosetting) which degrades by a photo-oxidative mechanism and which has only limited compatibility with the derivative. The pigment protects the bulk of a deposited coating, and the limited compatibility causes a heated film of the coating solution to stratify as the solvent evaporates to concentrate the derivative at the surface of the cured coating to protect the same.

Siliconized polyester thermosetting coating compositions

A chinawood oil-phenolic resin condensate particularly useful in high solids content solution coatings is produced by heat reacting: (1) an o-cresol-formaldehyde condensate containing about 1 to about 2 mols of formaldehyde per mol of o-cresol; with (2) from about 80% to about 95% of its weight of chinawood oil; and (3) from 2% to 10% of the total weight of an alkyd resin which is a condensate of a polyethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic fatty acid containing from 16-22 carbon atoms with about 0.5 mol per mol of said acid of an aliphatic glycol having a molecular weight of less than about 200.

A bisphenol is reacted with formaldehyde in solution in alcohol in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide, preferably at a pH of from 7-10, to provide a polymethylol derivative. Nitric acid is then added to precipitate the hydroxide and an excess is preferably used to provide an acid pH, preferably pH 1-3, and the acidic mixture is heat reacted to remove water of etherification. The nitric acid catalyst is then precipitated with alkali metal hydroxide to enable easy removal of both acid and alkali as an insoluble salt.
