A storage subsystem such as an array of disk drives, method of managing disk drives in the storage subsystem and program product therefor. The storage subsystem may be a redundant array of independent disks (RAID) and the individual disks drives may be Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) capable drives. When one of the drives gives an indication of an impending failure, a disk image of the failing disk is built on an available spare disk. Once the image is complete, the failing disk may be replaced without down time for rebuilding a failed disk.

A method and system for automatically providing termination to a SCSI I/O bus within a data processing system is disclosed. An inline terminator is provided for use within a data processing system. The inline terminator provides a connection between a first controller and an I/O bus utilizing a plurality of connection pins including a device removal detection pin. The inline terminator includes a terminator circuit and a control circuit coupled to the device removal detection pin to detect whether the controller and bus are connected. In one embodiment, the detection pin is a short ground pin on the SCSI bus that is not associated with a signal or differential signal pair. The terminator circuit is activated when the controller and bus are disconnected and deactivated otherwise to automatically terminate the I/O bus.

Separable in-line automatic terminator for use with a data processing system bus

Arrangements for physically partitioning a bus having a well defined architecture as a physical entity, wherein the partitioning is logically transparent to a computer and devices which communicate through the bus and serves to avoid problems potentially arising because of the scope of actions permitted by the architecture. A typical bus architecture to which present arrangements have relevance is that associated with SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) buses. The potential problems allowed to occur architecturally involve: (a) exposures of data security/integrity; (b) excessive signal degradation due to use of signal rates which although allowed by the architecture are inappropriate for a particular bus loading environment also allowed by the architecture; (c) restrictions preventing parallel transfer of data between the computer and multiple storage devices; (d) restrictions unduly limiting the number of devices attachable to one logical bus path (one input-output channel of the computer). The disclosed arrangement partitions the bus into two or more physical entities which to the computer appears as one logical entity.

Physical partitioning of logically continuous bus

Lockable covers are used to cover either of two types of shield blocks to prevent access to circuits within either of two types of external ports on computing devices. Each such shield block covers the port contacts associated with these circuits, includes locking surfaces for holding the lockable cover in place, and is itself held in place by the attachment features provided on the external port for holding an external cable in place. One such shield block is held in place by a pair of screws extending into threaded holes in the external port, while the other such shield block is held in place by a pair of flexible wire bails rotatably mounted in the external port.

Device-port locking covers

Cover assemblies, capable of being locked and unlocked by means of a key, are configured to be placed over the connectors at each end of an external computer system cable. When these cover assemblies are locked in place, the cable cannot be unplugged from the connector ports of the system devices. When these cover assemblies are unlocked, they can be removed from the cable, and the cable can then be unplugged from the connector ports. A first type of cover assembly is designed to operate with a connector which is fastened in place in its plugged position by means of a pair of screws, while a second type of cover assembly is designed to operate with a connector which is fastened in placed by means of a pair of rotatable wire bails. These cover assemblies may also be used to prevent access to connector ports to which cables are not attached by locking in place terminators commonly used on such ports, or by locking in place shells configured for this purpose, if such terminators are otherwise not required.

Apparatus for assigning addresses to devices connected to a small computer system interface (SCSI) bus. A second configure bus interconnects address assignable devices on the SCSI bus. The assignable devices may be used in a mixed system where some devices have fixed non-assignable addresses. The master device in the SCSI bus transmits configuration commands over the configuration bus and addresses for assignment over the SCSI bus. Acknowledgements are received back from a device which has accepted an address. Once configured with an address, the device propagates subsequent configuration commands to an adjacent device.

Apparatus and method for assigning addresses to SCSI supported

A cable connector, terminator, or shield is fastened in place over a port connector in a unit having a lockable cover, by fastening means which can only be accessed when the cover is unlocked and opened or removed. In a first version, the cable connector, terminator, or shield includes a pair of tabs extending into the unit through a slot at each end of the port connector, with each tab having a notch which forms a latching surface. A rotatable bracket, engaging these latching surfaces, prevents the removal of the connector, terminator, or shield. With the cover opened or removed, this bracket can be rotated into a position in which the latching surfaces are released. In a second version, a locking bracket is provided to extend around an outer portion of the cable connector, terminator, or shield. This locking bracket includes a shaft extending through a hole into the unit, to be fastened in place by a nut engaging a threaded portion of the shaft. The nut can be accessed to release the shaft from within the unit only when the lockable cover is opened or removed. In a third version, the connector, terminator, or shield includes a pair of slidably mounted shafts, which extend through holes at each end of the port connector to engage holes within a latching bar. When the lockable cover is opened or removed, the latching bar can be manually slid from a locked position in which these shafts are held in place, to an unlocked position, in which they are released. Thus, in all versions, physical access to electronic circuits within the port connector is prevented as long as a cable connector, terminator, or shield is held in place with the lockable cover locked in its closed position.

Means for locking cables and connector ports

A plug-in feature board for a computer system has special circuitry to permit the board to customize itself to the particular slot into which it is inserted. Computers of the type intended for individual use or use in small networks typically provide insertion slots including connectors to permit feature boards to be added and connected to a bus of the computer for adding new function or capacity. As the computing power of such systems has increased there have been increases in the size of portions of the connecting bus to permit improvements in data transfer performance. In a given computer system there are often two or more bus connector configurations presented in respective slots. By so converting electrical states at selected connector positions as to provide signal information for determining bus configuration for the slot, special logic provided on the board is enabled to determine the characteristics of the slot in which the board is placed and customizes the board to respond or limit response in accordance with the requirements for that configuration. By so adapting to the slot the board achieves enhanced applicability and avoids certain system disabling malfunctions which can occur when a board is plugged into a slot for which it is not configured.
