Friction materials for clutch, brake shoes and the like are formed of a paper having reduced or eliminated non-functional processing additives. The paper composition includes components selected from a group consisting of aramid pulp, aramid staple, carbon/polyacrylonitrile fibers, glass wool, potassium octatitanate, bronze wool, high surface area filter cake, graphite, amorphous carbon and cyanated phenolic resin. The paper composition may be pre-compounded to a particle size in the range of 60 to 200 mesh. Part molding may be carried out by microwave heating the paper at 250&deg; to 55&deg; F.

Friction facing composition and method of manufacture

A rotary drive unit powers a double-acting cam and a Geneva drive. The cam actuates two double-acting pumps which supply pressurized hydraulic fluid to a double-acting motor. A punch is reciprocated by the motor to punch sectors from a sheet material. The Geneva drive rotates a carrier which is indexed to receive material punched from the sheet. The hydraulic fluid is maintained in the system by a pair of check valves which deliver fluid as required from a pressurized reservoir to the pumps during a low pressure portion of the pumping cycle. Also provided are bleed and fill valves and pressure relieve valves which further assist in filling the system and controlling the maximum system pressure.

Hydraulic apparatus for actuating a punch for a clutch facing machine

A punch has a hydraulic actuating system incorporating reciprocal pumps and a reciprocal motor. The motor drives a punch secured to a punch plate or retainer into a die to cut friction pads from a sheet of material for placement in a carriage or directly onto a clutch plate. The punch retainer has a resting position during which the sheet of friction material is not contacted by the punch. To ensure the proper resting position, a plurality of power cylinders are pressurized to extend rod members to contact and position the punch retainer as required.

Hydraulic punch actuator with centering apparatus

An apparatus is provided for use in a method of making a torque converter clutch. The torque converter clutch is comprised of an annular clutch plate to which is secured or bonded an annular friction surface. The annular friction surface is formed on the machine by die-stamping, from a flat sheet of friction material, successive arcuate segments. Each arcuate segment is stamped into a holding ring which is indexed to accept the next successive segment until a full annulus is provided. The holding ring is transported to a stripper station. Simultaneous with the stamping, the annular clutch plate is heated and transported to the stripper station. When both components are in the stripper station, the friction annulus is stripped from the holding ring onto the heated clutch plate. The clutch plate and attached friction annulus are discharged from the machine. Simultaneous with the stamping, the offal of the sheet of friction material is cut transversely and longitudinally for discharge into an egress channel.

Method of making a torque converter clutch

A vehicle wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS) is provided including a master cylinder and a wheel brake. A controller cognizant of the rotational condition of the wheel provides a signal when the wheel condition is within preset parameters. An actuator frame is also provided having a bore fluidly communicating with the wheel brake. A piston is mounted within the bore for providing a variable control volume in communication with the wheel brake and for modulating the pressure therein. A reversible motor reciprocally powers the piston. The motor has a rotor with a connected disc. A friction surface is provided for engagement with the disc to lock the position of the piston. A plunger is also provided to urge the friction surface into engagement with the disc. An electromagnetic core, responsive to a signal by the controller, moves the plunger to a position allowing cessation of engagement between the friction surface and the disc thereby allowing rotation of the motor and movement of the piston.

Anti-lock braking system with electromagnetic brake

An anti-lock braking system (ABS) and traction control (TC) integration is provided including an actuator with fluid connections with a master cylinder, reservoir, and a wheel cylinder. A primary piston with an interior bore and a radial bore for selective alignment with the actuator fluid connections is slidably mounted in the actuator. A normally closed solenoid valve connects the reservoir with the actuator. A sensor determines wheel speed and generates a signal. The primary piston is moved along an actuator bore in response to the signal. The actuator also has a bore axial stop. A secondary piston is slidably mounted within the primary piston. The secondary piston has land surfaces forming a sealed chamber within the primary piston and a head section sealably mounted within the actuator bore exposed to the actuator connection with the wheel cylinder. The piston has an interior passage connecting the actuator connection with the wheel cylinder with the secondary piston sealed chamber.

Anti-lock braking and traction control system

An isolation valve responsive to close upon an activation signal given by said controller prevents fluid communication between the master cylinder and the wheel brake. An actuator frame is also provided having a bore fluidly communicating with the wheel brake. A piston is mounted within the bore for providing a variable control volume in communication with said wheel brake for and modulating the pressure therein. A reversible motor reciprocally powers piston. The motor has a rotor with a connected disc. A friction surface is provided for engagement with the disc to lock the position of the piston. A plunger is also provided to urge said friction surface into engagement with said disc. An electromagnetic core, responsive to a signal by said controller, moves the plunger to a position allowing removal of engagement between said friction surface and said disc thereby allowing rotation of the motor and movement of the piston.
