Methods, systems, and computer program products for providing dynamic batch management of shared packet buffers are disclosed. A virtualized computer system may include a hypervisor with access to memory and executed by a processor to maintain a pool of host memory to store a plurality of incoming network packets received by a network device, adjust a number of memory buffers associated with the pool of host memory to resize the pool of host memory, receive an indication of an incoming network packet stored in the pool of host memory by the network device, and provide the incoming network packet to a guest. In an example, the hypervisor uses the pool of host memory to perform batch processing of the incoming network packets and dynamically adjusts the size of the pool during the processing by adding or removing memory buffers in response to an event, condition, request, etc.

Dynamic batch management of shared buffers for virtual machines

A method includes loading a guest virtual machine onto a host system, determining, with the host system, an encapsulation method to be used in association with a virtual network associated with the guest virtual machine, determining an overhead value based on the encapsulation method, determining an adjusted maximum transmission unit (MTU) value based on the overhead value, and passing, information related to the adjusted MTU value from the host system to the guest virtual machine.

An apparatus sets a layer counter to point to a first layer of a data structure. The apparatus determines the layer counter to reference an overflowing cell. The apparatus increments the layer counter to point to a second layer of the data structure. The apparatus determines the incremented layer counter to reference a non-overflowing cell. The apparatus increments a value of the non-overflowing cell, wherein the first layer is stored in a first cache and the second layer is stored in a second cache, and wherein the first cache differs from the second cache with respect to one or more of speed or size.

Methods, systems, and computer program products for providing zero-copy multiplexing using copy-on-write are disclosed. Examples generally relate to both physical and virtualized computer systems. A computer-implemented method may include receiving notification of an incoming network packet, determining that a section of the network packet is to be modified, creating a copy of the network packet section to be modified, modifying the network packet section copy, and sending a memory location of the modified network packet section copy to an application. In a virtualized computer system, a hypervisor may receive notification of an incoming network packet, determine that a section of the network packet is to be modified, create a copy of the network packet section to be modified, modify the network packet section copy, and send a memory location of the modified network packet section copy to a guest when providing a modified network packet to the guest.

Zero-copy multiplexing using copy-on-write

A hypervisor running on a host machine identifies a first media access control (MAC) address prefix associated with the host machine, wherein the first MAC address prefix comprises one or more bits that are shared by MAC addresses for virtual machines hosted by the host machine. The hypervisor configures the host machine to filter packets based on a first MAC address prefix filter, wherein the first MAC address prefix filter passes packets addressed to MAC addresses that have the identified first MAC address prefix. The hypervisor assigns MAC addresses having the first MAC address prefix to a plurality of virtual machines that will be hosted by the host machine.

A computing device identifies a plurality of network interface controllers (NICs) that are available for link aggregation. The computing device probes a network using a plurality of protocols to detect a topology of at least one network to which the plurality of NICs are connected. The computing device automatically establishes a link aggregation configuration including one or more of the plurality of NICs based on the determined network topology.

A network switch receives routing information pertaining to a virtual machine from a hypervisor managing the virtual machine. The switch adds a wild card entry associated with the virtual machine to a first routing data structure, wherein the wild card entry specifies one or more exact match fields, one or more wild card fields and an action to perform for packets having properties that match the one or more exact match fields.
