A coalescent consisting essentially of a residue from a process for forming propyleneglycol phenyl ether, the coalescent consisting essentially of 65%-75% by weight, based on the weight of the residue, dipropyleneglycol phenyl ether, 8%-10% by weight, based on the weight of the coalescent, monopropyleneglycol phenyl ether, 4%-6% by weight, based on the weight of the coalescent, tripropyleneglycol phenyl ether, and 0.1%-10% by weight, based on the weight of the coalescent, alkalinity (reported as NaOH) is provided. Also provided is a method for forming certain low-VOC, low cost, coalesced aqueous polymeric dispersions including, as copolymerized units, from 70% to 100% by weight, based on the solids weight of the aqueous polymeric dispersion, vinyl acetate monomer and an aqueous coating composition including the coalesced aqueous polymeric dispersion.

The present invention relates to a stable aqueous dispersion of multiphase amphoteric polymer particles comprising a crosslinked polymer phase comprising structural units of a phosphorus acid monomer, a carboxylic acid monomer, a multiethylenically unsaturated monomer, and an ethylenically unsaturated nonionic monomer; and a second polymer phase comprising a carboxylic acid monomer and an ethylenically unsaturated nonionic monomer. The present invention also relates to composites of the particles and pigment particles such as TiO. The composition is useful for preparing dried coatings with improved hiding.

An organic polymer including internal pendant phosphorous acid groups at a level of &#x3e;0.25% phosphorus by weight based on the weight of said organic polymer, the phosphorus acid groups being separated from the backbone of the organic polymer by no more than 2 alkylene glycol units, the organic polymer having an acid number of from 100 to 1,000, and a Mw of from 1,000 to 75,000, wherein the organic polymer has been formed by emulsion polymerization from at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer is provided. The present invention is directed, in part, to improved nanocomposite compositions and processes for preparing same. Specifically, in one embodiment, there is provided a process for preparing an aqueous nanocomposite dispersion, wherein the process comprises: polymerizing via suspension polymerization a suspension comprising at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a hydrophobically modified clay to form the nanocomposite dispersion after polymerization, wherein the hydrophobically modified clay is dispersed in the monomer. Other embodiments include processes for preparing aqueous nanocomposite particles, colloids, and dispersions using hydrophobically modified clays in aqueous systems and compositions comprising same.

A coating composition including a polyaniline particle and a binder is provided. The polyaniline particle contains a core polymer particle with strong acid groups and an attached polyaniline polymer, and has a particle diameter in a select range. Coatings prepared from the coating composition may be employed to provide corrosion resistance to metal substrates. A process for preparing the polyaniline particle and an article including a coating prepared from the coating composition are also provided.

The present invention comprises a polymeric binder for water-resistant ink jet inks, wherein the binder has an acid component in the range from about 1 to about 10 wt. % of the polymer, a glass transition temperature in the range from about &minus;20&deg; C. to about 25&deg; C., and an average particle diameter in the range from about 250 to about 400 nm and a particle size distribution such that essentially all the particles have a diameter in the range from 130 to 450 nm. The binder comprises monomers selected from the group consisting of acrylates, methacrylates, styrene, substituted styrene, fluoromethacrylates, vinyl acrylates, vinyl acetates, acrylamides, substituted acrylamides, methacrylamides, substituted methacrylamides, or combinations thereof.

An emulsion polymerization process for making a low molecular weight alkali-soluble copolymer of a water insoluble monoethylenically unsaturated aromatic monomer and methacrylic acid, includes heating an aqueous reaction mixture, said reaction mixture having a pH of less than or equal to about 4.5 and including from about 25 parts by weight to about 75 parts by weight of the water insoluble monoethylenically unsaturated aromatic monomer; from about 25 parts by weight to about 75 parts by weight methacrylic acid; a polymerization initiator; a reducing agent; a catalyst effective for promoting decomposition of the polymerization initiator in the presence of the reducing agent; and an amount of a chain transfer agent effective to limit copolymer weight average molecular weight to a range of about 2,000 to about 40,000; to a temperature greater than or equal to about 75.degree. C.; and maintaining the reaction mixture at a temperature greater than or equal to about 75.degree. C. for a period of time effective to allow formation of the copolymer.

Disclosed herein are core-shell polymers having an alkali-insoluble, emulsion polymer core and an alkali-soluble, emulsion polymer shell attached or associated with said core so that upon dissolving said shell with alkali, a portion of said shell remains attached or associated with said core. Also disclosed are compositions wherein said shell polymer has been neutralized and substantially, but not totally, dissolved so as to form a blend of neutralized core-shell polymer and an aqueous solution of neutralized shell polymer.
