Embodiments of the present invention relate to methods and apparatuses directed towards communication cables and barrier tapes for use in communication cables. In an embodiment, the present invention employs conductive segments within the communication cables and/or on the barrier tape.

Communication cable with improved crosstalk attenuation

Communication cables are provided in which a core lay length of the cable varies along the cable length. The cable may be provided with different segments that have different core lay lengths. It is desirable for neighboring core lay lengths in a cable to differ by a factor of two, to enable a reduction in power-sum alien near-end crosstalk (PSANEXT) when two cables are installed alongside one another. Segments of the cable having different core lay lengths may be spaced periodically along the length of the cable, and the periodicity of the spacing may be altered by a jitter distance. The introduction of jitter into the periodicity of the spacing of the segments increases the likelihood that a beneficial placement of core lay lengths will occur when two or more cables are installed alongside one another.

Communication cable with variable lay length

A matrix tape with conductive segments. The conductive segments are preferably provided on two layers of the matrix tape. The conductive segments can be attached to a film with an adhesive. A barrier tape is preferably applied between the cable core and the matrix tape.

Methods and apparatus directed towards communication cables and barrier tapes for use in communication cables are disclosed herein. In an embodiment, the present invention employs conductive segments within the communication cables and/or on the barrier tape.

The filler element defines a width that is substantially larger than the width of each the twisted pairs of insulated conductors. The filler element has a central axis laterally offset from the central longitudinal axis of the cable jacket. The filler element reduces alien crosstalk from an adjacent cable. A separator is disposed in said cable jacket between the twisted pairs of insulated conductors to reduce crosstalk between the twisted pairs of insulated conductors.

An electrical cable that has a cable jacket defining a central longitudinal axis and at least first, second, third, and fourth twisted pairs of insulated conductors oriented longitudinally within the cable jacket and forming a core. Each of the twisted pairs of insulated conductors defines a width. A filler element is disposed in the cable jacket and located adjacent to at least one of the twisted pairs of insulated conductors. The filler element defines a width that is substantially larger than the width of each of the twisted pairs of insulated conductors. The filler element has a central axis laterally offset from the central longitudinal axis of the cable jacket, and the filler element is twisted around the core.
