A powered surgical handpiece system including a cutting accessory having a shaft extending along an axis and having a distal tissue working member and a proximal section. The proximal section includes retention features and a flat. The system includes a drive shaft having a bore for receiving the proximal section of the cutting accessory. A collet attached to the drive shaft includes a base, a leg, and a foot. The collet rotates with the drive shaft and the foot seats against the shaft of the cutting accessory. A lock assembly selectively moves the foot of the collet from a run state and a load state. An alignment collar has a non-circular opening such that when the flat of the shaft of the cutting accessory presses against a planar surface of the alignment collar, retention features are aligned with the foot of the collet.

Powered surgical handpiece system

A cutting accessory for use with a powered surgical handpiece includes an elongated shaft, a tissue working member, and a proximal section. The elongated shaft has proximal and distal ends, and a longitudinal axis. The working member is attached to the distal end of the shaft. The proximal section extends proximally from the distal end and includes a plurality of faces extending inwardly from an outer surface of the shaft. Each face has at least one shallow portion and is shaped to receive a clamping member. At least two of the faces are arranged linearly, extending along the shaft proximal section. A flat extends distally forward of the distalmost face, and is located a distance from the shaft longitudinal axis greater than the distance the shallow portions are located from the longitudinal axis and less than the distance the outer surface of the shaft is from the longitudinal axis.

Cutting accessory for a powered surgical handpiece

A motorized surgical handpiece with a chuck. Internal to the chuck are clamping members that releasably hold clamp the shaft of a cutting accessory to a drive shaft so the cutting accessory rotates upon the actuation of the motor. The chuck includes a collar with an opening through which the cutting accessory is inserted. The opening is non-circular in shape. When an accessory shaft with a cross sectional shape that matches the shape of the opening is inserted in the opening, the accessory shaft is appropriate aligned with the chuck clamping members.

A bur with features that minimize the application of substantially identical forces to the tissue against which the bur is applied. One of these features is the arrangement of the flutes so that one pair of flutes projects outwardly from the tip at an acute angle that is greater than the angle at which the other flutes project outwardly from tip. Consequently at the equator of the bur head, the location along the bur head where the bur head has a maximum diameter, the flutes define a perimeter that is non-circular in shape.

A bur with features that minimize the application of substantially identical forces to the tissue against which the bur is applied. One of these features is a single groove located in a single one of the flutes. The groove is formed in the flute so as to be spaced proximally away from the distal end tip of the bur head. Another feature is that, adjacent the distal end tip of the bur head, the clearance surfaces of the flutes extend outwardly different distances from the longitudinal axis through the bur head. Another feature is that the flutes extend in a helical pattern around the bur head and the angle of the helix varies along the longitudinal axis of the bur head.
