Method and systems for configuration and control of an inter-integrated circuit (I2C) bus interface are described. An electronic device that may be connected to an external battery device via a modified connector is also described. The connector has multiple interconnect pins, and one of the interconnect pins of the connector is multiplexed to receive data operation and interrupt or signaling operation on a single line. The single line is configured to not only detect a connection with the external battery device, but also to perform data operations including read/write operations between the electronic device and the external battery device.

Systems and methods for dynamic configuration and control of bus interface

A modular recharging system includes an electronic device that performs diagnostics on a removable battery pack that the electronic device can use to boost the power of its internal battery. Typically, the battery pack will have a larger battery than the internal battery of the device. The electronic device determines whether the battery pack will take a charge before determining whether the battery pack is authorized to assure that an authorization failure is not due to other issues such as a dead battery, an underpowered battery, or a broken connection between devices.

Smart diagnostics for hot-pluggable battery systems

This disclosure is directed to apparatuses, methods, and systems for detecting a capability of a power source connected to a device. For example, a device may include a standardized connector that may allow an unknown power source to provide power to the device. When a power source is connected with a device, a controller powers up and initiates power capability detection procedures. A ramping current sink begins drawing current from the power source at an initial value and increases that amount to a maximum current value. If a voltage on the device voltage bus falls below a voltage threshold during the ramping current sink operation, the current sink is disconnected and an indication is provided to the controller that the power source is underpowered. Further, a safety timer turns off the ramping current sink to prevent excessive heat generation.

Power source capability detection

A control circuit configured to conserve battery in a mobile device is described. The control circuit upon receiving an input signal from an input sensor sends a suspend signal to the power management integrated circuit (PMIC), which may turn off power in the rest of device and keep the processor and PMIC powered on, thereby transitioning the mobile device into a suspend mode. After a predetermined period of time, the mobile device saves all processes running on the processor and registry content of the memory in a non-volatile memory on the device and shuts off the PMIC and the processor to transition into a hibernate mode. The input sensor and control circuit which receive power directly from the battery management can turn on the PMIC and the processor upon receiving an awake signal from the input sensor, thereby transitioning the device back to an awake mode.

Systems and methods are provided for optimizing battery life in an electronic device. The device is configured to make periodic assessments of battery capacity by measuring the DC resistance value of the battery cell during the execution of a power-consuming operation. If the measured DC resistance value reaches a threshold level, the device can initiate a power-saving mode in which an operating parameter of the device is adjusted to decrease power consumption.

Event-based trigger for managing battery consumption

A small capacity battery for powering electronic devices, such as an e-book reader, is provided. This small capacity battery is designed to produce low area-specific resistance, which maintains usable operating voltages even during periods of high current draw. Example methods may include determining that a power source is in communication with a first battery, determining that a second battery is in communication with the first battery, and charging the first battery at a first charging current value. Example methods may include charging the second battery at a second charging current value, determining that an input voltage from the power source is equal to or greater than a voltage threshold, and charging the second battery at a third charging current value that is higher than the second charging current value.
