A prepolymer system has a monomeric isocyanate content of no greater than about 10% by weight based on 100 parts by weight of the prepolymer system. The prepolymer system comprises a diluent component and a prepolymer component different than and separate from the diluent component. The diluent component has an excess of isocyanate (NCO) functional groups, and comprises the reaction product of a monohydric isocyanate-reactive component and an excess of a first isocyanate component. The first isocyanate component comprises monomeric isocyanates reactive with the monohydric isocyanate-reactive component. The prepolymer component also has an excess of NCO functional groups, and comprises the reaction product of a polyol component and an excess of a second isocyanate component. The prepolymer system can be used to prepare foams via reaction with water. The foams have low density and have excellent adhesion and sound dampening properties for use in cavities of automobile bodies.

Prepolymer systems having reduced monomeric isocyanate contents

A method produces a uretonimine-modified isocyanate composition having increased low-temperature tolerance. The method comprises providing a first polyisocyanate composition having two or more isocyanate groups and comprising 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and reacting the first polyisocyanate composition at a temperature of from about 90&#xb0; C. to about 115&#xb0; C. and in the presence of a catalyst such that the isocyanate groups form carbodiimides for forming uretonimine and uretonimine oligomers. The reaction of the first polyisocyanate composition is quenched with a quenching agent to produce an intermediate composition having an intermediate isocyanate value of from about 21.0 to about 26.0. The intermediate composition is blended with a second isocyanate composition to form a stable uretonimine-modified isocyanate composition.

Method of producing a uretonimine-modified isocyanate composition

A uretonimine-modified isocyanate composition has reduced color. The uretonimine-modified isocyanate composition comprises a polyisocyanate composition having two or more isocyanate groups and comprising 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and a catalyst for catalyzing a reaction of the isocyanate groups to form carbodiimides available for forming uretonimines and uretonimine oligomers. A first quenching agent partially quenches the reaction of the isocyanate groups to inhibit formation of the carbodiimides thereby inhibiting additional formation of uretonimines and uretonimine oligomers and a second quenching agent different than the first quenching agent quenches the reaction of the isocyanate groups to further inhibit formation of the carbodiimides thereby further inhibiting additional formation of uretonimines and uretonimine oligomers. A method of forming the uretonimine-modified isocyanate composition is also disclosed.

Uretonimine-modified isocyanate composition and method of forming the same

A uretonimine-modified isocyanate composition having reduced color and a method of forming the same is disclosed. The method of forming the uretonimine-modified isocyanate composition comprises providing a polyisocyanate composition having two or more isocyanate groups and reacting the polyisocyanate composition at a temperature in a range of from about 80&#xb0; C. to about 130&#xb0; C. and in the presence of a catalyst. The reaction of the polyisocyanate composition is quenched with a quenching agent and a color inhibitor having a low basicity and having at least one hindered amine group is added. The uretonimine-modified isocyanate composition has a color value corresponding to an a* value of greater than about &#x2212;10 and a b* value less than about 10 as defined by CIE L*a*b* (CIELAB) Color Space Specification and undergoes a % NCO group decrease of less than about 6 %.

The invention provides coating compositions comprising a reactive component (a) which is substantially free of any heteratoms and is a not a crystalline solid at room temperature and which comprises from (i) 12 to 72 carbon atoms, and (ii) at least two functional groups, and (b) a crosslinking agent comprising a plurality of functional groups (iii) reactive with the functional groups (ii) of compound (a), wherein functional groups (ii) and (iii) are selected such that reaction there between produces a thermally irreversible chemical linkage. The coating compositions of the invention provide improved solids, chip resistance, flexibility and/or scratch & mar resistance while maintaining desirable and/or improved performance characteristics with regard to environmental etch, relative humidity, QCT, chip resistance, thermoshock resistance, cold crack resistance, adhesion and the like.

Compounds useful for improving the dispersibility of micaceous particulates in aqueous-based coating compositions comprise urethanes or ureas which are the reaction products of silylalkyl or silylaryl isocyanates with alcohols, amines, polyether alcohols or amine-terminated polyethers. The compounds may also be the reaction products of silylalkyl- or silylarylamines with half-blocked diisocyanates which are themselves the reaction products of a diisocyanate with an alcohol, amine, polyether alcohol or amine-terminated polyether. Micaceous particulates which have been surface modified by reaction with these compounds, as well as coating compositions comprising such surface-modified micaceous particulates, and coated substrates are also disclosed.

Surface-modified micaceous particulates having improved dispersibility

The present invention is directed to a pigment dispersant for use in coating compositions. The dispersant is the reaction product of a functionalized copolymer, a polyalkylene glycol monalkyl compound to impart water soluble character to the copolymer, and a urea-containing pigment interactive substituent that enhances pigment dispersion in solution.

This invention, therefore, relates to the field of polyurethane coatings for use in automobile basecoat/clearcoat systems. In particular, this invention relates to water-dispersible polyurethane resins having polyether sidechains which may be utilized in basecoat compositions as principal resins or grind resins. These polyurethane resins may be laterally stabilized or terminally stabilized. The terminally stabilized resins of this invention are preferably employed as principal resins in basecoat compositions.
