An intraocular lens injector cartridge having a heat retention additive for helping the cartridge retain heat once the cartridge is warmed. Such additives can include an biocompatible material having high heat retention, for example, powdered gold.

Intraocular lens injector cartridge

A surgical handpiece having at least two lumens mounted to a body. At least one lumen is used for aspiration and at least one other lumen is used to inject heated surgical fluid for liquefying a cataractous lens. A portion of the second lumen is enlarged to form a pumping chamber. The pumping chamber works by boiling a small volume of the surgical fluid. As the fluid boils, it expands rapidly, thereby propelling the liquid downstream of the pumping chamber out of the second lumen. The pumping chamber may use any type of heater, such as a resistive heater or an induction heater. The handpiece may also contain other lumens for injecting relatively cool surgical fluid.

Liquefaction handpiece

A surgical handpiece driver having a pumping chamber. The pumping chamber works by boiling a small volume of a fluid. As the fluid boils, it expands rapidly, thereby propelling a piston down the length of the pumping chamber. The piston may be attached to the operative shaft or rod of a surgical probe and produce reciprocal motion. Alternatively, the piston may be attached to a cam or gear to product rotary motion.

Surgical handpiece

A surgical handpiece having at least two lumens mounted to a body. One lumen is used for aspiration, the second lumen is used to inject heated surgical fluid for liquefying a cataractous lens. A portion of the second lumen is surrounded by an insulated heating element that heats the surgical fluid as it passes through the second lumen. The handpiece may also contain a device for delivering the surgical fluid through the second lumen in metered pulses of a defined volume.

A device for performing an anterior capsulotomy procedure has an elongate tubular member with an opening formed near the distal end thereof. A cutter is movably disposed within the tubular member and has a blade formed thereon. A vacuum port is in fluid communication with the lumen of the tubular member. An actuator effects movement of the cutter so as to move the blade across the opening. The opening is configured to draw in a portion of a capsule when a vacuum is applied to the vacuum port such that the cutter forms a generally circular cut of a predetermined size in the capsule when the actuator is actuated.

Anterior capsulotomy device and procedure

An aspiration tip having a relatively rigid cannula attached to a hub and an open end opposite the hub. The open end is sealed with a cap made from a soft, flexible material, such as rubber or soft plastic. The soft material reduces the likelihood that the posterior capsule will tear during cortical clean-up and capsule polishing.

Soft aspriation tip

A phacoemulsification sleeve having a centering ring isolated within an outer shell. A bellows-like sleeve between the handpiece and the outer shell provides a fluid path for the irrigating fluid.

Phacoemulsification sleeve

A method of calculating the required power of an intraocular lens to be implanted in an eye having the steps of measuring the axial length, preoperative anterior chamber depth and natural lens thickness of the eye, measuring and averaging corneal radii of curvature along a first axis and along a second axis normal to the first axis, calculating a lens locator constant from the axial length and the averaged corneal radii of curvature using a quadratic surface equation, determining a postoperative anterior chamber depth using the measured preoperative anterior chamber depth, the measured natural lens thickness and the calculated constant and calculating the required power of the intraocular lens and the predicted postoperative refraction using the postoperative anterior chamber depth.
