Use of porous metal oxide microspheres as light stabilizers for shaped artificial polymer articles, wherein the porous metal oxide microspheres are prepared via a process comprising forming a liquid dispersion of polymer nanoparticles and a metal oxide; forming liquid droplets of the dispersion; drying the droplets to provide polymer template microspheres comprising polymer nanospheres; and removing the polymer nanospheres from the template microspheres to provide the porous metal oxide microspheres.

A polyolefin composition includes a polyolefin substrate having incorporated therein a nucleating agent and a filler, wherein the composition exhibits an impact strength of &#x3e;35 in-lb measured according to ASTM D4226, and a coefficient of linear thermal expansion of &#x3c;4.5&#xd7;10E-05 in/in/ft measured according to ASTM D696. The polyolefin composition may further include one or more of an ultraviolet light absorber, a hindered amine light stabilizer, an antioxidant, a colorant, a flame retardant, and an antimicrobial compound. The polyolefin compositions may be useful for construction articles for outdoor use, for instance house siding, cladding, soffit or roofing.

Polyolefin compositions for building materials

Polyolefin compositions useful for construction articles for outdoor use, for instance house siding, cladding, soffit or roofing. The compositions comprise a polyolefin substrate which has incorporated therein one or more additives selected from the group consisting of a) one or more ultraviolet light absorbers, b) one or more hindered amine light stabilizers and c) one or more antioxidants. Advantageously, the polyolefin substrate also has incorporated therein d) one or more colorants, e) one or more fillers, f) one or more flame retardants and optionally g) one or more antimicrobial compounds. The compositions exhibit certain performance levels according to standard tests, for example impact strength of &#x3e;35 in-lb per ASTM D4226, coefficient of linear thermal expansion of &#x3c;4.5&#xd7;10E-05 in/in/ft per ASTM D696 and optionally acceptable color uniformity in finished siding parts per ASTM D6864 and/or acceptable low delta E color for the intended application per ASTM D2244 and/or a UL-94 V-1 or V-0 rating and/or a flame spread index of &#x3c;200 according to ASTM E-84.

Solid state polymerization process for polyester with phosphinic acid compounds

Disclosed is a method for increasing the solid state polymerization (SSP) rates of metal catalyzed polyesters. The method comprises in a first step, reacting a dicarboxylic acid or a C-Cdicarboxylic diester with a diol at a suitable temperature and pressure to effect esterification or transesterification to prepare a precondensate and in a second step, reacting the precondensate to effect polycondensation at a suitable temperature and pressure to prepare a high molecular weight polyester and in a third step, further increasing the molecular weight and viscosity of the polyester under SSP conditions of a suitable temperature and pressure, where a metal catalyst is added in the first step or in the second step as a reaction catalyst, and where a certain phosphinic acid compound is added in the first step, in the second step or just prior to the third step. The polyester product exhibits low aldehyde formation during melt processing steps as well as excellent color.

The present invention is aimed at a method of providing wettability to polyester fibers or filaments, to woven or nonwoven fabrics made therefrom and to resultant articles of manufacture. The method comprises melt extruding a mixture comprising a polyester and one or more alkyl metal sulfonates where the metal is Na, Li or K and the alkyl is straight or branched chain alkyl of 12 to 15 carbon atoms, or is straight or branched chain alkenyl of 12 to 18 carbon atoms. The alkyl metal sulfonates are present from about 2% to about 5% by weight based on the weight of the polyester. A post treatment step such as an alkaline treatment step is not included. The melt extrusion mixtures do not include certain additives such as polyoxyalkylene compounds, alkylmonoethonolamide compounds, alkyldiethanolamine compounds and polyetheramide compounds.

Wettable polyester fibers and fabrics

Selected chlorohydrin and cationic compounds containing nitroxide or hydroxylamine moieties are effective in stabilizing pulp or paper, especially pulp or paper containing lignin, against yellowing and discoloration due to the adverse effects of light. These compounds are added at various points in the paper-making process, especially at the wet ends, making the need for water soluble or water dispersible materials having high affinity for pulp or paper essential. This performance is often further enhanced by the presence of one or more coadditives selected from the group consisting of the UV absorbers, the polymeric inhibitors, the nitrones, the fluorescent whitening agents and metal chelating agents. Combinations of hydroxylamines or their salts, benzotriazole or benzophenone UV absorbers and a metal chelating agent are particularly effective.

Polymeric stabilizers with high affinity to pulp

1,2-Bis-adducts of stable hindered nitroxide compounds with substituted ethylenes are prepared by reacting two equivalents of nitroxyl compound with an ethylenically unsaturated compound such as styrene or an acrylate ester. These adducts are very effective inhibitors to prevent the premature polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers when such monomers are distilled, processed or stored.
