A golf clubhead includes a projection which extends downwardly from the sole of the clubhead. The projection extends rearwardly from the face of the clubhead and away from the heel of the clubhead. The projection extends generally in the direction in which the clubhead is moving when it impacts a golf ball.

A golf clubhead includes a face insert whose hardness varies from the center of the face insert to the outside of the face insert for compensating for off-center hits. The hardness of the face insert can be varied by forming the face insert from a plurality of rings or by varying the thickness of the insert.

A golf club head is provided with a cavity which has a pair of side walls which extend at an angle of about 0.degree. to about 50.degree. to the hosel of the club head. The shape of the cavity positions a substantial portion of the weight of the club head in the upper portion of the toe of the club head and in the lower portion of the heel of the club head. The orientation of the weight of the club head provides a substantial moment of inertia about an axis which extends through the center of gravity at an angle of about 45.degree..

A golf clubhead has weight distributed on opposite sides of a non-vertical axis which extends through the center of gravity of the clubhead in a plane which intersects the axis of the shaft above the clubhead to provide more accurate off-center hits. Wooden clubs are provided with bulge and roll which curve, respectively, about said axis and an axis perpendicular thereto. The radius of the roll is increased to make the loft of the club substantially uniform from top to bottom.
