A computer system has a capacity planner for creating and updating a workload redistribution schedule. A migration utility provides for redistribution of the workloads. A redistribution orchestrator directs, according to the schedule, the migration utility to implement the workload redistributions.

One example method includes storing first time series data that identifies, on a per power distribution unit (PDU) basis, current drawn from a set of PDUs. With the two time series data available, the method may then provide a PDU-device correlation signal that identifies a correlation between current drawn from a PDU and power used by a device.

To achieve consistent health service measures, a method and an apparatus combine various metrics from both internal sources and external sources that relate to the service under observation. This service health information is generated independently from specific provider applications and performance monitoring tool sets, thereby allowing shorter time-to-market for service management solutions. In one embodiment, a method comprises executing respective workload management processes within a plurality of computing compartments to allocate at least processor resources to applications executed within the plurality of computing compartments, selecting a master workload management process to reallocate processor resources between the plurality of computing compartments in response to requests from the workload management processes to receive additional resources, monitoring operations of the master workload management process by the other workload management processes, detecting, by the other workload management processes, when the master workload management process becomes inoperable, and selecting a replacement master workload management process by the other workload management processes in response to the detecting.

An apparatus and method to automatically activate a reserve resource when the load on a number of active resources (e.g., a number of CPUs or servers) meets a threshold. A resource usage policy specifying at least one threshold and having a corresponding task is compared to a monitored load on the active resource. When the monitored load meets the threshold as specified in the resource usage policy, the corresponding task is performed. For instance, the corresponding task can be to signal an event manager (e.g., a pager), to activate a reserve resource, etc. Once a reserve resource is activated, the load is balanced among the number of active resources and the activated reserve resource. When the load drops below the threshold, the processor can deactivate the reserve resource. In a preferred embodiment, the processor updates a configuration profile for tracking each of the resources. Another embodiment includes charging a fee for monitoring and activation.

A method for the automatic selection of computer system parameter values to improve system performance as workload on the system changes. Methods are disclosed for automatically making minor adjustments to computer system parameters and comparing long-term associated performance changes in order to set parameter values so as to obtain improved system performance. The time frame over which a change in a system parameter and the associated system performance change is averaged is adjustable, thus permitting evaluation over shorter or longer periods of times as deemed appropriate. An objective measure of system performance is defined prior to implementation of the present methods. For transaction based systems, average system response-time for a given demand on the system could be, for example, such a measure. For systems executing batch-type workloads, system throughput may be used as the indicator of how well the system is performing.
