Pin for a disc brake

A disc brake having a ball-in-ramp actuator retained in a caliper for supplying a piston with a static clamping force to move first and second friction members into frictional engagement with a rotor to effect a parking brake application. The clamping force is transmitted from the ball-in-ramp actuator into the piston through an adjustment screw mechanism. The disc brake being susceptible to a thermal expansion and a thermal contraction and as a result the effect of the clamping force applied to bring the first and second friction members into engagement with the rotor may change during a time period that the parking brake application is initiated until it is terminated. The adjustment screw mechanism is characterized by a spring that is compressed by the actuation force to initiate the parking brake application that expands and contracts to compensate for the thermal contraction and expansion of the disc brake such that the effect of the static clamping force remains substantially the same for the duration time of the parking brake application.

Parking brake

A disc brake having an anchor member with first and second grooves that receive first and second ears on a backing plate to align a friction surface of a friction pad with a rotor. A first slipper spring is secured to the anchor and located between the first groove and the first ear. A second slipper spring is secured to the anchor and located between the second groove and the second ear. The first and second ears correspondingly slide on the first and second slipper springs in response to an input force being applied to move the backing plate toward a rotor to bring the friction surface into engagement with the rotor during a brake application. Each of the first and second slipper springs is characterized by a base with parallel top and bottom side walls that extends therefrom. The top side wall has a lip thereon that engages the anchor to position the base in a groove. The bottom side wall has an arm that extends therefrom along a plane that forms an angle of less than 90 degrees with respect to the base and second wall. The arm tangentially engages a single point contact on the backing plate to resiliently urge the ears away from the grooves to define a first gap between the ear and the base of each slipper and to resiliently urge the ear into engagement with the top side wall to define a second gap between the ear and the bottom side wall such that the backing plate slides in the first and second slipper springs without binding while a radial component of the tangential resilient engagement attenuates movement of the backing plate caused by vibration of the backing plate.

Caliper for a disc brake

A disc brake (10) with an anchor (12) fixed to a housing. The anchor (12) has non-symmetrical first (18) and second (20) rails which align first (22) and second (24) friction pads with a rotor (26). The first rail (18) has first (32) and second (34) sections with constraining surfaces (48,48') thereon separated from first bearing surfaces (50,50') by a first groove (44,44'). The second rail (20) has first (36) and second (38) sections with aligning surfaces thereon (55,55') separated from second bearing surfaces (60,60') by a second groove (53,53'). The first bearing surfaces (50,50') have a first complementary relationship with respect to aligning surfaces (55,55') and the second bearing surfaces (60,60') have a second angled complementary relationship with respect to the constraining surfaces (48,48'). The first (22) and second (24) friction pads (24) each have a carrier member (62,62') with a first projection (64,64') that respectively contact the constraining surface (48,48') along a first line of tangency in the first sections (32,34) of the first rail (18) and a second projection (68,68') along a second line of tangency in the first section (36,38) of the second rail (20). A spring (88) engages the first (62) and second (62') carrier members to sustain the second line of tangent contact with the second bearing surface (60,60'). The first (22) and second (24) friction pads on being moved into engagement with the rotor (26) produce a braking force to effect a brake application. The braking force causes the carrier members (62,62') to pivot about the first point of tangency engagement on the constraining surfaces (48,48') and transmit one half of the braking force into the first rail (18) and the other half of the braking force into the second bearing surfaces (60,60') through the second line of tangency during a brake application.

A guide pin (24) attached to a caliper (21) and located in a bore (28) of an anchor bracket or carrier member (22) in a disc brake (10). The carrier member (22) and caliper (21) move with respect to each other in response to a force developed by a piston for urging friction pads (18,20) into engagement with a rotor (12) to effect a brake application. The guide pin (24) is characterized by a head (36) having a shaft (38) extending therefrom into a bearing (62,64) which is located between the shaft (38) and housing surrounding the bore (28). The bearing (62,64) has dissimilar resistances to stiffness in a radial plane than in a tangential plane such that vibratory forces are attenuated and dynamic forces generated during a brake application are absorbed to maintain alignment between the friction pads (18,20) and rotor (12).
