A multiprocessor system having plural heterogeneous processing units schedules instruction sets for execution on a selected of the processing units by matching workload processing characteristics of processing units and the instruction sets. To establish an instruction set's processing characteristics, the homogeneous instruction set is executed on each of the plural processing units with one or more performance metrics tracked at each of the processing units to determine which processing unit most efficiently executes the instruction set. Instruction set workload processing characteristics are stored for reference in scheduling subsequent execution of the instruction set.

Multicore processor and method of use that configures core functions based on executing instructions

A mobile device accepts a selection of a file for opening or editing or both. The file is associated with a file type. A mobile application on the mobile device identifies the file type associated with the file. A request message is constructed that is indicative of the file type and one or more user credentials. The request message is sent to a cloud server. The mobile device receives an address for a selected cloud image from the cloud server and, in response thereto, connects to a remote processing environment in the selected cloud image.

Methods and apparatuses for generating desktop cloud instances based upon mobile device user file selections

A smart tile system and methodology, each tile having a sensor device and control unit for monitoring an environmental condition of a room or space. A plurality of smart tiles form a hive community resulting in a tightly coupled sensor network configured to communicate in clusters and collaborate to accomplish missions. One of the missions is environmental control which is communicated to a tile in the form of a policy. The tiles around one piece of equipment in the room or space may control the regulating of cooling/heating for just that one piece of equipment allowing little to not impact of other equipment(s) in the room. The smart tile of the hive communicate over a mesh network protocol, and one or more smart tiles comprise a vent under actuator control wherein the tile is configured to receive commands to adjust the vent opening according to a desired setting.

A media viewing method and system monitors user interaction with an electronic program guide. An awareness engine collects data generated by the user interaction and forms awareness indicators and information. The awareness information is output to end users and is indicative of which users in a social circle are accessing (e.g. viewing, playing, or recording) or have accessed which media works. Some output enables user-to-user interaction. The media works may be supplied by cable television, satellite television, online or global computer network sources.

Method and apparatus for displaying interactions with media by members of a social software system

A processor has multiple cores with each core having an associated function to support processor operations. The functions performed by the cores are selectively altered to improve processor operations by balancing the resources applied for each function. For example, each core comprises a field programmable array that is selectively and dynamically programmed to perform a function, such as a floating point function or a fixed point function, based on the number of operations that use each function. As another example, a processor is built with a greater number of cores than can be simultaneously powered, each core associated with a function, so that cores having functions with lower utilization are selectively powered down.

Multicore processor and method of use that adapts core functions based on workload execution

A processor having multiple cores coordinates functions performed on the cores to automatically, dynamically and repeatedly reconfigure the cores for optimal performance based on characteristics of currently executing software. A core running a thread detects a multi-core characteristic of the thread and assigns one or more other cores to the thread to dynamically combine the cores into what functionally amounts to a common core for more efficient execution of the thread.

Configuring plural cores to perform an instruction having a multi-core characteristic

Mechanisms are provided for conference call communication in a virtual world environment. The mechanisms establish a hybrid conference call by establishing a hybrid conference call communication connection between a data based communication conference call server, that handles data based communications with client computing devices, and a telephone conference call server, that handles telephone protocol communications with telephone devices external to the virtual world environment. Communications between client computing devices and telephone devices are converted from data based communications to telephone protocol communications and vice versa using a data based communication conference call server and a telephone conference call server.

Conferencing that bridges virtual world and real-world meeting places

A multiprocessor system which includes automatic workload distribution. As threads execute in the multiprocessor system, an operating system or hypervisor continuously learns the execution characteristics of the threads and saves the information in thread-specific control blocks. The execution characteristics are used to generate thread performance data. As the thread executes, the operating system continuously uses the performance data to steer the thread to a core that will execute the workload most efficiently.

Method for autonomic workload distribution on a multicore processor

A snoop coherency method, system and program are provided for intervening a requested cache line from a plurality of candidate memory sources in a multiprocessor system on the basis of the sensed temperature or power dissipation value at each memory source. By providing temperature or power dissipation sensors in each of the candidate memory sources (e.g., at cores, cache memories, memory controller, etc.) that share a requested cache line, control logic may be used to determine which memory source should source the cache line by using the power sensor signals to signal only the memory source with acceptable power dissipation to provide the cache line to the requester.

Power-aware line intervention for a multiprocessor snoop coherency protocol

A machine code builder providing improved software controlled power management is described. A machine code builder reads pre-executable code and builds machine code from the pre-executable code to maximize a duration that a resource is not required. The resource(s) not required may be user defined or the builder can analyze the pre-executable code to determine which resource(s) are not required. The builder re-organizes machine code to maximize the time a particular resource is not used. Mechanisms are also provided to have resource emulation code execute during re-energizing of a resource to prevent loss of performance.

Machine code builder derived power consumption reduction

A power saving cache and a method of operating a power saving cache. The power saving cache includes circuitry to dynamically reduce the logical size of the cache in order to save power. Preferably, a method is used to determine optimal cache size for balancing power and performance, using a variety of combinable hardware and software techniques. Also, in a preferred embodiment, steps are used for maintaining coherency during cache resizing, including the handling of modified ('dirty') data in the cache, and steps are provided for partitioning a cache in one of several way to provide an appropriate configuration and granularity when resizing.

Method of dynamically controlling cache size

A computer display system, method and article of manufacture are presented allowing a user to interactively arrange two-dimensional windows for display in three dimensions on a two-dimensional display screen of the computer system. A window manager associated with the display screen is configured to respond to a user's selection of a frame edge of a window, e.g., using a third mouse button, by rotating the window from a two-dimensional depiction to a three-dimensional depiction. Rotation of the window occurs on an edge frame opposite to the selected edge frame and the rotation angle is related to the magnitude that the user drags the pointing device after selection of one edge frame of the window to be swung. In a similar manner, multiple windows can be swung for three-dimensional viewing and simultaneous display within the display screen.
