Dual purpose apparatus and process for increasing the efficiency of absorption of oxygen by a biodegradable waste in a continuous operation in a waste collection station and for removing the oxygen enriched waste from the collection station by separately introducing waste and oxygen, which may be air, into a collector under a highly agitated state, and agitating the air and waste under pressure in a collector by a partially recessed vortex type impeller as back pressure is provided to the collector either by a nozzle means or an outlet means. The collector is mis-matched relative to the impeller to increase the retention and mixing time of the air and waste in the collector. The oxygen enriched waste is removed from the collector either by the nozzle means into the waste water in which the apparatus may be immersed, or the outlet means, wherein said outlet means also serves to remove the waste from the collection station, said nozzle means or said outlet means being alternatively actuated with regard to the passage of waste there through by a value diverting means.

A pump assembly includes a shaft driven rotary impeller operating in a housing and adapted for pumping a stream of material-carrying liquid through a pump chamber in the housing, with an annular seal assembly operative about a portion of the impeller shaft where the shaft extends through a wall of the housing. An annular seal chamber about the annular seal is adapted for receiving impeller driven seal lubricating and cooling liquid from the stream. A vane arrangement causing a sweeping flow of the liquid moves through the seal chamber with flushing effect.

An apparatus and method for increasing gas absorption in a liquid includes, in a first embodiment, gas injection airfoils at an inlet of an extended vertical tube and a pump at an outlet of the tube for drawing the liquid at a rate greater than the rise rate of the gas bubbles. An outlet of the pump preferrably includes a plurality of outlet nozzles. A second embodiment for use with a liquid or slurry includes a venturi gas inlet in place of the airfoils.

A system and method of removing dissolved gases and volatile organic chemicals from a water supply is provided. Water is supplied under pressure to a contacting chamber in a manner wherein it causes air to be aspirated into the chamber for turbulent contacting with the water. The air and water are directed through the contacting chamber in a common axial direction. Either the water or air may be heated prior to introduction to the contacting chamber to enhance the effectiveness of the dissolved gases and volatile organic chemicals removal.

A centrifugal oxygenator pump includes a bottom inlet into an impeller chamber, the bottom inlet having a venturi gas inlet for mixing gas with the in flowing liquid. The impeller chamber is of a frusto-conical shape within which is rotatably mounted a similarly shaped mismatched impeller, the impeller driving the liquid and gas mixture toward a toroidal outlet chamber and through an outlet to an outlet nozzle. The motor drives the impeller to attain a high specific speed so that an increased capacity and larger size oxygenator is provided with maximum efficiency and effectiveness.

A centrifugal slurry pump includes wear resistant inserts on the wear faces of the first impeller shroud and the wear face of the front pump housing in the impeller chamber. The preferred embodiment provides hardened ceramic material inserts mounted in compression.
