A dispenser, which is capable of dispensing viscous material on a substrate having a top surface and a bottom surface, includes a frame, a gantry system, and a dispensing unit. The gantry system is configured to move the dispensing unit in x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis directions. The dispenser further includes a substrate support assembly configured to support the substrate in a dispense position to dispense material on the top surface of the substrate and on the bottom surface of the substrate. The substrate support assembly includes a clamping system and an inverter system. The inverter system is configured to rotate the clamping system about an axis that is parallel to the y-axis direction between a first position in which the top surface of the substrate is in the dispense position and a second position in which the bottom surface of the substrate is in the dispense position.

A media handling system is provided for an imaging system, such as an external drum platesetter. An edge clamp used to secure a printing plate onto a cylindrical media support surface of the external drum is movable about the drum surface to accommodate the use of different size plates. The edge clamp includes a clamping bar which is radially movable with respect to the media support surface to attach to the media support surface and capture an edge of the printing plate by employing vacuum hold down force.

The present invention provides a media handling system for an imaging system, such as an external drum platesetter. Separate input and output trays are provided, thereby allowing pre-staging of a second printing plate while a first printing plate is being imaged. The input tray is positioned over the output tray to reduce the floor space (i.e., footprint) of the imaging system.

External drum imaging system

The invention involves an internal drum thermal imaging apparatus comprising a support for supporting a receiver material and a donor material in a superimposed relationship. The support includes a cylindrical drum having an inner circumference on which the receiver material is supported against in a bottom layer of the superimposed relationship and the donor material in a top layer of the superimposed relationship. An imaging unit thermally transfers an image from the donor material to the receiver material. An applicator automatically loads and unloads the receiver material and the donor material onto the cylindrical drum comprising an applicator carriage, an attachment device for attaching the receiver material to the applicator and an applicator transport device for transporting the applicator carriage along the inner circumference of the cylindrical drum.

A punch assembly is provided with a positive retraction mechanism to remove the punch from the media to be punched, thereby preventing binding of the punch in the media. The punch assembly includes a driving mechanism to provide a driving force on the punch and a positive retraction mechanism disposed to provide a retraction force on the punch operative sequentially following operation of the driving mechanism. The punch assembly, which is of a smaller size and more economical to manufacture, is particularly useful with an imagesetter of a prepress printing system. The punch may be mounted in a cantilever manner to punch the opening as close to the edge of the media as possible without interfering with the laser beam of the imaging assembly. In this maimer, the area of media available for imaging may be maximized and media waste minimized. Additionally, a shaft support mechanism is provided for the shaft upon which the retraction mechanism for each punch is mounted. When the punches advance into the media, an oppositely directed force is placed on the shaft. The shaft support mechanism supports the shaft when it is so loaded by the punches, thereby minimizing deflection of the shaft and allowing use of a smaller diameter shaft. Other equipment, such as take-up rollers which are used to transfer the media may also be fixed to the punch assembly. Similarly, a cutter assembly which cuts sheets of the media may also be fixed to the punch assembly.
