A method for transforming an image expressed in terms of a first image encoding to a second image encoding, includes converting a set of original scene exposure-factor values into corresponding first and second image encoding values. A transform is then derived between the first image encoding values and the second image encoding values. The transform is then applied to an image encoded in said first image encoding. Examples of different encoding that can be transformed include Rec. 709, sRGB and other known image encoding standards. A system for performing such transformations as well as an electronic device that is capable of performing such transformations are also disclosed.

A method for displaying a color image by providing a color image display apparatus having at least three narrow-band emissive light sources that define a display color gamut. Image data values are accepted that are defined within an original color gamut that is smaller in area than the display color gamut. The input image data values are transformed into display color gamut data values having an expanded image chromaticity range. At least a portion of the expanded chromaticity range lies outside the original color gamut. At least a portion of the display color gamut lies outside the expanded image chromaticity range. The display color gamut data values are provided to the color image display apparatus to form an image.

An image signal transform mechanism employs one or more composite transforms that convert image bearing-signals corresponding to unrendered input images into output device-associated colorimetry values. Through a first sequence of transformations, the image bearing signals are related to database color encoding values. Through a second transformation sequence the database color encoding values are transformed into modified colorimetry values in terms of a viewing environment.
