A self-adapting signal detector is adapted to be used with a plurality of guidepath sensors for controlling an automatically guided vehicle. The circuitry detects the presence of a valid guidepath signal over a large dynamic range without the need to make threshold or gain adjustments. A background noise signal is detected as well as a signal from each of the guidepath sensors. The background noise signal is substracted from each sensor signal to define a plurality of difference signals. A maximum remainder signal is defined as the maximum difference signal. Each difference signal is then compared with a predetermined percentage of the maximum remainder signal. Those sensors whose signal level exceeds the predetermined percentage of the maximum remainder signal by a predetermined amount are defined to be a valid guide path signal. The maximum remainder signal is also compared with a predetermined percentage of the background noise signal to determine the signal-to-noise ratio. If the signal-to-noise ratio signal falls below a predetermined value, a signal is provided to stop the vehicle. In an alternate embodiment, the lesser of a predetermined percentage of the maximum remainder signal and a predetermined percentage of the background level is selected to define a reference signal. Those sensors whose signals exceeds the reference signal are defined to be a valid guidepath signal.

Self-adapting signal detector with digital outputs

A non-contact collision avoidance system for an automatically guided vehicle is disclosed for preventing collisions between the vehicle and obstacles in the path of the vehicle during vehicle maneuvers, including relatively sharp turns. A sensor device mounted on the vehicle provides panoramic sensing of obstacles in the path of the vehicle. The field of view of the sensor device is altered as a function of the vehicle steering angle. Also disclosed is a steering angle sensor comprising an optical shutter system for providing a signal representing the steering angle of the vehicle.

Controlled direction non-contact detection system for automatic guided

An unmanned guided vehicle (10) is propelled along a path (P) by a traction mechanism. Movement of the vehicle (10) on the path is controlled by a first control. The vehicle (10) includes storage (40) for storing at least one container (30) and transfer mechanism (44) mounted for vertical movement on the vehicle (10) for moving the at least one container (30) between at least one stationary location and the storage (40). The vehicle (10) also includes second control (16) which selectively controls the transfer of the at least one container (30) between the at least one stationary location and the storage (40). The vehicle (10) is moved to the stationary location whereupon the container (30) is moved from the storage (40) to the transfer mechanism (44) and then to the stationary location or vice versa. The invention also encompasses a materials handling system including a self-propelled, automatically controlled vehicle (10) which follows a path (P) so as to transport a plurality of containers (30) between the three spaced areas in a building. The vehicle (10) includes mechanism for automatically and selectively unloading from the vehicle any one of a plurality of containers at any one of the three spaced areas.

Materials handling system

An automatically guided vehicle (110) is disclosed which follows guide lines positioned in a predetermined guide path (102) on the floor. The guide path (102) includes coded markings and the vehicle comprises sensing circuitry (210) capable of sensing the markings and generating proximity signals indicative thereof. The coded markings can indicate approach of the vehicle into a 'congestion' zone wherein other vehicles similarly situated can cause hazardous conditions therein. Radio frequency (RF) transmission circuitry (240) on the approaching vehicle (110) is responsive to the congestion zone indication signals to transmit and receive RF signals to and from other vehicles on the guide path (102). The approaching vehicle (110) performs various collision avoidance operations as determined by the received RF signals.

Vehicle collision avoidance system

A vehicle which is automatically driven and steered on a predetermined guide path and which has a manual control behind a front door and/or operable by rotating a tiller from a vertical to a horizontal position has a reverse control with an exteriorally located actuating means for driving the vehicle in a reverse direction when the other manual controls are inaccessible. The reverse control overrides both the manual control as well as the automatic control for the vehicle.
