There is provided a system and method of evaluating wireless device and/or wireless network performance and/or user experience, on a wireless electronic device. The method includes providing wireless device software on the wireless electronic device, the wireless device software being embedded in an application or memory of the wireless electronic device; having the wireless device software initiate a test that examines network traffic to measure a performance metric associated with an application, a network and/or the wireless electronic device and/or user experience, wherein the wireless device software is tailored to a specific application or media type according to the test being performed; the wireless device software interacting with at least one test server to perform the test, wherein data corresponding to the media type is sent to, or received from, the at least one test server; and the wireless device software receiving or determining test data associated with the test, the test data being indicative of at least one quality, experience, or performance metric associated with the specific application, media type or network used during the test.

System and method for evaluating wireless device and/or wireless network performance

There is provided a method of evaluating user churn in wireless networks. The method includes receiving data from a plurality of wireless electronic devices connected to and operating in a plurality wireless networks and/or network types, wherein the data has been collected for each wireless electronic device by wireless device software embedded in an application or memory of the respective wireless electronic device and configured to collect the data when the wireless electronic device accesses one or more of the plurality of wireless networks and/or network types, and wherein the data comprises one or more identifiers associated with the wireless electronic device or a user of the wireless electronic device. The method also includes aggregating the data received from the plurality of wireless electronic devices; analyzing the aggregated data to determine how at least one of the identifiers flows through the plurality of networks, devices, and/or network types; and outputting a prediction or indication of user network churn or user device churn based on which networks, devices, and/or network types the user or wireless electronic device accesses.

There is provided a method of evaluating wireless device performance, and/or wireless network performance, and/or wireless network usage trends, on a wireless electronic device, the method comprising: providing wireless device software on the wireless electronic device, the wireless device software being embedded in an application or memory of the wireless electronic device, and being operable to perform at least one test associated with characteristics and/or location of the device, and/or performance of the device and/or the network, and/or usage of the device by a user; communicating with at least one of: i) an operating system of the wireless electronic device and ii) an external testing server to perform the at least one test, wherein the at least one test is performed according to at least one testing parameter provided in a configuration and/or the wireless device software, the at least one testing parameter comprising at least one behavioural criterion that controls the impact of the testing on the operation of the wireless electronic device; collecting test data resulting from the performance of the at least one test; and providing the test data to a collection server.

There is provided a method of controlling behaviour of a system that evaluates wireless device performance, and/or wireless network performance, and/or wireless network usage trends. The method comprises providing wireless device software to each of a plurality of wireless electronic devices connected to one or more of a plurality of networks by having the wireless device software embedded in at least one application or memory of the corresponding electronic device, wherein the wireless device software is embedded in or operable with a plurality of types of applications and performs at least one test associated with characteristics and/or location of the device, and/or performance of the device and/or the network, and/or usage of the device by a user; receiving via one or more collection servers, test data obtained by the wireless device software of each of the plurality of wireless electronic devices; providing a data set to a third party, the data set comprising at least some of the test data; and enabling a configuration server in communication with the wireless device software to be controlled to modify the testing behaviour of the wireless device software based at least in part on the data set provided to the third party.

System and method for interacting with and controlling testing of wireless device and/or wireless network performance on wireless electronic devices

Disclosed are systems and methods for improving applications involving the generation and detection of electromagnetic radiation at terahertz (THz) frequencies. Embodiments of the systems and methods include the fabrication and use of plasmonic devices that enhance light-matter interaction at the nanometer scale by extreme focusing with nanostructured metals. This plasmonic enhancement is used to produce high efficiency THz photoconductive switches that combine the benefits of low-temperature grown GaAs while using mature 1.55 &#x3bc;m femtosecond lasers operating with photon energy below the GaAs band-gap.

System and method for evaluating wireless device and wireless network performance

Telecommunication networks are under stress due to rapid traffic increase cause mostly by large file transfers. Disclosed herein is a cross-layer transport protocol specifically designed to efficiently handle large transactions. Traffic generated from large transactions is shaped into a periodic succession of fixed-size data frames. Each transaction can then be scheduled for transmission using a two-way reservation protocol. Exemplary results show that the proposed approach is capable of significantly improving goodput and end-to-end delay relative to TCP, improving efficiency of bandwidth utilization by over 40%.

System and method for efficient transport of large data files

A system for managing the device operation rules that govern a device's operation, includes a profiling server configured to receive data from one or more data sources and a processor to aggregate and analyze the received data to dynamically generate profiles for distribution to a plurality of devices. The devices, which are in communication with the profiling server, being responsive to profiles generated by the profiling server to create, update, or modify the said operation rules and communicate with the profiling server the performance of the said profiles, the said rules, and/or the said device. The system allows the device operation rules to be dynamically updated in accordance with changing network conditions, and also can provide analytics information to third parties.

System for regulating wireless device operations in wireless networks

A novel overlay networking method designed specifically to handle the large file transfers that constitute a large and growing portion of media-rich Internet traffic is disclosed. The proposed system and method uses large (e.g., 10 MB) packets or Media Frames (MF) and orderly concatenations of these frames into chains (MC) to achieve a considerable reduction in power consumption relative to current IP Internet routers. Transmission of each MC is scheduled, while individual MFs are routed directly in interstices within MCs.

System and method for efficient networking for large file transactions

Disclosed are systems and methods for improving the performance of systems for generating and detecting electromagnetic radiation at terahertz (THz) frequencies. Embodiments of the systems and methods include the fabrication and use of coupling tapers to provide efficient transfer of THz radiation between a photomixer and a waveguide that supports a propagating THz mode. A representative system comprises of a photomixer to convert high-frequency components of an optical pump signal into corresponding electrical THz frequencies, a waveguide that supports a propagating THz mode, and a matching taper that effectively converts the highly localized currents generated by the photomixer to the mode supported by the waveguide.

Disclosed are devices and methods for enhancing the performance of photoconductive switches or photomixers used to generate or receive terahertz radiation. An interlaced electrode is used to minimize carrier transit times across an absorbing semiconductor photoconductor. This electrode is designed to support a plasmonic resonance such that coupling of the optical pump signal to the absorbing photoconductor is enhanced.

Disclosed are systems and methods for improving wavelength control in tunable laser sources. Embodiments of the systems and methods include delivering a fraction of the light output from the laser to an optical filter subsystem. The optical filter subsystem is capable of outputting at least one filter response signal, and comprises 2 complementary optical etalon filters with nominally identical free spectral ranges but offset by nominally one third of the free spectral range. The filter response signal is processed in a control unit which executes a control algorithm to generate a tuning signal that is used to control the wavelength of the laser.

Optical networks interconnect a plurality of optical network units (ONUs) to an optical line terminal (OLT). The OLT comprises a plurality of optical transceivers that are wavelength division multiplexed and connected to a WDM metro network. The metro network is configured to facilitate communication of a plurality of wavelengths between the OLT and local nodes, the local nodes including a wavelength sharing network configured to connect at least one of the wavelengths communicated with the OLT to a plurality of feeder fibers. The feeder fibers connect the wavelength sharing network to remote nodes that comprise WDM devices that have pluralities of output ports. An optical combiner allows the first and second ONUs to share the same transceiver in the OLT.

Extended broadband passive optical networks

Embodiments of a photonic link having low residual carrier, for use in transmitting information between an electronic signal source and an electronic signal receiver is provided. The photonic link comprises a transmitter, which uses angle modulation, and two threshold optical frequency discriminators that are biased to provide large even-order distortion, an optical signal receiver and at least one transmission fiber to transmit complementary modulated signals between the transmitter and the optical signal receiver, whereby the optical signal receiver reconstructs the complementary modulated signals into the electronic information for acceptance by the electronic signal receiver. Exemplary methods of transmitting information are also provided.

Photonic link using angle modulation and method of use thereof

Embodiments of a photonic link having low residual carrier, for use in transmitting information between an electronic signal source and an electronic signal receiver are provided. One exemplary photonic link comprises a transmitter, which has two non-linear threshold electronic to optical converters that are biased to provide large even-order distortion, an optical signal receiver and at least one optical transmission path to transmit complementary modulated signals between the transmitter and the optical signal receiver, whereby the optical signal receiver reconstructs the complementary modulated signals into the electronic information for acceptance by the electronic signal receiver. Exemplary methods of transmitting information are also provided.
