A double-walled container is formed by gas assist injection molding. Thereafter, the container is further processed by 1) inserting a gas between the container layers, 2) injecting a colored liquid between the container layers, 3) evacuating the void space between the container layers, or 4) pressurizing the space between the container layers.

Gas assist injection molding

A plastic container comprises an upper section including a neck portion, a closed base section, and a central section interconnecting the upper and base sections. The central section comprises an elastically deformable, substantially cylindrical sidewall, including indicia embossed therein. The embossed indicia substantially assumes the configuration of the sidewall when the container is pressurized, and extends away from the sidewall when the container is depressurized.

An improved plastic container of the type suitable for containing carbonated beverages. The container is provided with a central section, an upper section including a typically threaded neck portion, and a lower end or base section typically including radially arrayed concave foot portions to support the container in an upright position. The horizontal cross-section of the central section manifests the configuration thereof to include a plurality of juxtaposed generally flat panels which upon pressurization of the container tend to blend together to form a circular cross-sectional configuration.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for developing a strain crystallized morphology in blowbottles of thermoplastic material by a heat treatment process subsequent to a blow molding operation. In a first embodiment, the blow mold itself includes means for differentially heating the blown article along its length so that only those portions which have been significantly molecularly oriented are heat treated. In a second embodiment, separate mold-shaped members are mounted adjacent the blow mold to receive the blown articles to apply the desired heat treatment process. In the method, an essentially amorphous thermoplastic parison is expanded in a blow molding operation at a temperature conducive to molecular orientation and strain induced crystallization. Then, the highly molecularly oriented bottle portions are heat treated to develop crystalline growth, while other non-molecularly oriented bottle portions may be simultaneously cooled.

Apparatus for forming heat treated blown thermoplastic articles

A method is disclosed for enhancing the yield strength and density of polyethylene terephthalate and other similar thermoplastic materials which are susceptible to strain hardening. In the method, the plastic material is thermally conditioned to a temperature within a range conducive to molecular orientation, and then is mechanically conditioned by stretching in a first direction to a length at least about 2.6 to 2.75 times the original length. Thereafter, the plastic material is stretched in a second direction, with strain hardening and strain-induced crystallization increasing drastically substantially immediately upon the initiation of the second stretching operation due to the mechanical conditioning by elongation during the first stretch. The invention is particularly suitable for forming blow molded containers, where a blowable parison or preform is first stretched along its longitudinal axis to the critical length and is then extensively strain hardened while being blown to the configuration of the container.
