In an embodiment a semiconductor light source includes an optoelectronic semiconductor chip configured to emit radiation and a cover body arranged on the optoelectronic semiconductor chip, wherein the cover body comprises a light-transmissive base body, wherein the light-transmissive base body comprises a plurality of recesses with inclined side faces, the recesses start at an emission side of the light-transmissive base body remote from the optoelectronic semiconductor chip and narrow towards the optoelectronic semiconductor chip, wherein a mirror coating is provided at top regions of the recesses next to the emission side, and wherein bottom regions of the recesses closest to the optoelectronic semiconductor chip are free of the mirror coating.

A space-efficient Printed Circuit Board (PCB)-based inductor includes a first set of inductor turns formed on the printed circuit board and arranged to form a first toroidal end section, a second set of inductor turns formed on the printed circuit board and arranged to form a first cylindrical side section, a third set of inductor turns formed on the printed circuit board and arranged to form a second toroidal end section, and a fourth set of inductor turns formed on the printed circuit board and arranged to form a second cylindrical side section. The first toroidal end section, first cylindrical side section, second toroidal end section, and second cylindrical side section are connected in series.

Space-efficient PCB-based inductor

Techniques and architecture are disclosed for providing a modular lighting system/luminaire having an integrated heat sink assembly. In some cases, the system/luminaire may comprise a plurality of individual modular light sources which have been operatively coupled with one another. In some instances, a modular light source may include one or more light engines (e.g., light emitting diodes or LEDs) which have been operatively coupled with an individual heat sink module. When assembled, the plurality of heat sink modules may define, in the aggregate, a plurality of heat conduits which dissipate thermal energy from the light engines by convective heat transfer. Also, in some cases, the heat sink modules may be electrically isolated from one another, allowing for the heat sink assembly itself, in part or in whole, to function as part of the desired circuit.

Modular lighting techniques

A luminaire includes a fixture, a light engine, and a heat flange. The fixture is configured to be received in a recess of a support surface and defines a cavity having a radius R. The light engine is disposed within the cavity and includes at least one light source. The heat flange is disposed about a distal end region of the fixture and includes a hollow, generally conical frustum shape extending radially outwardly from the fixture and extending away from the distal end region of the fixture. A distal-most end of the heat flange is configured to be disposed a distance D from the support surface when the fixture is received in the recess, the distance D being greater than or equal to 0.4R. Thermal energy is conductively transferred from the light engine, through the fixture, to the heat flange where the thermal energy is convectively transferred from the heat flange to surrounding air to create air currents flowing along the support surface thereby reducing the junction temperature.

Partially recessed luminaire

A luminaire includes a fixture to be generally received in a recess of a support surface. A plurality of light engines are disposed within the fixture. The light engines each have at least one light source. A heat flange disposed about a distal end region of said fixture. The heat flange having a hollow, generally frustum shape with a cross-section extending generally radially outwardly beyond said fixture and extending away from said distal end region of said fixture. The hollow shape provides a flange cavity for housing of driver or other components for the light engines.

A rectangular luminaire includes a rectangular fixture defining at least one cavity having a plurality of light engines. A heat flange is disposed about a distal end region of the rectangular fixture and includes a hollow, generally pyramidal frustum shape with a generally rectangular cross-section. A distal-most end of the heat flange is configured to be disposed a distance D from a support surface when the rectangular fixture is received in a recess of the support surface, the distance D being greater than or equal to 0.4 times the fixture half-width W. Thermal energy is conductively transferred from the light engine, through the rectangular fixture, to the heat flange where the thermal energy is convectively transferred from the heat flange to surrounding air to create air currents flowing along the support surface thereby reducing the junction temperature.
