A receiver that receives a reference symbol comprising a sequence of a plurality of synchronization repetition patterns, wherein each repetition pattern contains a predetermined number of samples. The reference symbol is part of a digital signal modulated by using OFDM modulation. An end synchronization repetition pattern in the reference symbol is phase-shifted by 180&#xb0;, and the phase-shifted synchronization repetition pattern is positioned after the sequence of the number of synchronization repetition patterns. The receiver detects a timing of a correlation peak at the end of said reference symbol by performing a cross-correlation of the synchronization repetition patterns.

Transmitting apparatus and method for receiving a digital signal in a digital telecommunication system

A transmitting apparatus transmits signals in a digital telecommunication system and a synchronising method is used for synchronizing such signals at a receiving apparatus. The transmitting apparatus prepares for transmission a reference symbol having at least two repetition patterns, whereby one of the at least two repetition patterns is phase-shifted in relation to the other repetition pattern, and a synchronizing mechanism in the digital telecommunication system uses the reference symbol once received for synchronization. The synchronizing mechanism uses a cross-correlation mechanism to cross-correlate at least one of the two repetition patterns within a correlation window having a predetermined length.

Transmitting apparatus and method for a digital telecommunication system

The present invention relates to a device for receiving signals in a wireless cellular OFDM system, in which data symbols are transmitted in frequency subcarriers and timeslots. The present invention further relates to a method for channel estimation in such a device. According to the present invention, a channel estimation on the basis of received pilot symbols is performed, whereby the channel estimation for data symbols between pilot symbols is performed by means of a filter, said filter being selected from a set of filters on the basis of an interference reference value.

Receiving apparatus and synchronizing method for a digital telecommunication system

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed transmission and reception using a broadcast burst preamble. The preamble comprises at least one first part (A-FIELD) designed for a coarse frame detection and/or an AGC control, and at least one second part (B-FIELD) following the at least one first part in the time domain and being designed for a timing and frequency synchronization. The at least one first part (A-FIELD) and the at least one second part (B-FIELD) each include Inverse Fast Fourier Transformed (IFFT) frequency domain sequences of complex symbols. The frequency domain sequence of the at least one first part (A-FIELD) is set depending on the frequency domain sequence of the at least one second part (B-FIELD) such that a second autocorrelation peak mainly generated by the at least one second part (B-FIELD) of the preamble is optimized. The sequence of complex symbols of the first part differs from the sequence of complex symbols of the second part in at least one symbol.

The present invention relates to a device () for receiving signals in a wireless orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) system and to a channel estimation method in such a system. The data symbols and pilot symbols are transmitted in frequency subcarriers and timeslots, whereby pilot symbols are transmitted in a continuous stream within at least one frequency subcarrier. A channel estimation for a data symbol is performed on the basis of received pilot symbols using a filter including a common phase error correction value from the continuous stream pilot symbol in the same timeslot as the data symbol to be channel estimated. The present invention thereby enables a correct and efficient channel estimation including a common phase error correction to be performed.

The present invention relates to a cellular communication system for wireless telecommunication on the basis of an OFDM scheme, comprising a plurality of base stations B, whereby at least one base station B is allocated to each cell C of the communication system and whereby information communicated from the base stations comprises data parts and pilot parts. The present invention further relates to a method for operating such a cellular communication system. The present invention is characterised in that the frequency reuse factor of the data parts is different from a frequency reuse factor of the pilot parts. Hereby, an optimisation between high capacity and reliable and correct channel estimation on the basis of the pilot parts can be achieved.

According to the present invention a system and a method for synchronising digital communication systems is proposed. Thereby a reference symbol RS consisting of a sequence of a plurality of synchronisation patterns SP and followed by data symbols, which are both modulated (13) on a RF-frequency is provided. The received reference symbol (RS) is correlated with a delayed version of itself and the correlation peak is identified giving the position and complex correlation result that can be used for the timing and frequency synchronisation of a digital communication system. According to the present invention the phase of the last and/or the first of the plurality of synchronisation patterns SP of said reference symbol RS (or a part or a multiple thereof) is phase shifted, e.g. by 180.degree., before the transmission step. According to the present invention therefore the effects of random contribution of adjacent data symbols of the reference symbol to a correlation calculation based on a synchronisation algorithm can be entirely eliminated. Through the inversion of the last synchronisation pattern and the reference symbol the correlation peak, which is used to determine the symbol timing, is offset inside the reference symbol. Thus, the precision of the timing error estimation is improved significantly.
