A wavelength converting structure is provided, the wavelength converting structure including an SWIR phosphor having emission wavelengths in the range of 1600-2200 nm, the SWIR phosphor comprising a structurally disordered garnet material, a sensitizer ion, and at least one rare earth emitter ion. Also provided is a luminescent material having emission wavelength in the range of 1600-2200 nm, the luminescent material including (GdLuTmHoScRE)[ScLuCrGaAl]{GaAl}Owith RE=La, Y, Yb, Nd, Er, Ce and 0≤u≤2, 0<v≤1, 0<x≤1, 0<y≤0.5, 0≤z≤0.05, 0<a≤1, 0<b≤0.3, 0≤c≤3, 0<d≤1.8, 0≤e≤1.8. An IR emitting device including the luminescent material may provide a broad-band emission in the wavelength range of 1600-2200 nm with a continuous emission spectrum over a spectral width of at least 500 nm.

Optical filters are used to compensate for changes in LED and pcLED performance resulting from technological advances in device design or manufacturing, with for example the filtered optical output from later generation devices matching or substantially matching the optical performance of earlier generation legacy devices. This can allow the advanced generation devices to be substituted in applications previously supported by the legacy devices, even if the optical performance of the unfiltered advanced generation devices does not satisfy the optical performance specifications required by the application. Somewhat paradoxically, the advantages of using the filters in combination with the advanced generation devices may arise from the filters making the optical performance of the devices worse according to one or more figures of merit.

Optical filters compensating for changes in performance of next generation LEDs compared to legacy devices

Embodiments of the invention include an infrared-emitting phosphor comprising (La,Gd)GaAlSiO:Cr, where 0≤x≤1 and 0.02≤y≤0.08. In some embodiments, the infrared-emitting phosphor is a calcium gallogermanate material. In some embodiments, the infrared-emitting phosphor is used with a second infrared-emitting phosphor. The second infrared-emitting phosphor is one or more chromium doped garnets of composition GdScLuGaO:Cr, where 0.02≤x1≤0.25, 0.05≤x2≤0.3 and 0.04≤y≤0.12.

The invention describes a light conversion device having a light converter, which is adapted to convert primary light to converted light, so that a peak emission wavelength of the converted light is in a longer wavelength range than a peak emission wavelength of the primary light. The light conversion device also has a reflective structure coupled to at least a part of a coupling surface of the light converter, where the reflective structure is a narrowband reflector arranged to reflect at least some of the primary light impinging on the reflective structure and to transmit at least some of the converted light impinging on the reflective structure.

The invention provides an LED package configured to generate blue LED package light, wherein the LED package comprises a solid state light source configured to generate blue light source light, a luminescent material configured to convert part of the light source light into luminescent material light comprising green light, and a blue pigment configured to absorb part of the luminescent material light.

A translucent body's first surface is coupled to a top surface of a light converter. The light converter's bottom surface is coupled to a reflective bottom layer. A light coupling structure includes a hole in the reflective bottom layer and at least a slot in the light converter for receiving a light guide, and a light coupling surface for receiving laser light with a laser peak emission wavelength via the light guide. The light coupling surface is arranged so at least 80% of the laser light passing the light coupling surface is received by the translucent body. The translucent body comprises a second surface which is opposite the first surface and is coupled to a reflective top layer for reflecting at least part of the laser light back to the light converter. A peak emission wavelength of the converted light has a longer wavelength than the laser peak emission wavelength.

A laser lighting module for a vehicle headlight includes at least one laser, a scanning arrangement, a light conversion device, a safety mirror, a safety detector and a safety controller. The laser emits light in a first wavelength range and the scanning arrangement moves a beam of the light within a scanning solid angle so a spot of the light moves across the light conversion device. The light conversion device converts a fraction of the light to converted light in a different wavelength range than the first and emits a mixture of transmitted and converted light. The safety mirror is arranged within the scanning solid angle such that at least 90% of the transmitted light hits the safety mirror. The safety controller receives the control signal, generated by the safety detector from the safety detection light, and switches off the laser if the control signal exceeds a first threshold value.

A method according to embodiments of the invention includes providing a plurality of LEDs attached to a mount. A filter is attached to at least one of the plurality of LEDs. A protective layer is formed over the filter. A reflective layer is formed over the mount. A portion of the reflective layer disposed over the protective layer is removed.

A method according to embodiments of the invention includes providing a plurality of LEDs () attached to a mount (). A filter () is attached to at least one of the plurality of LEDs. The present invention relates to a LED module which converts pump light from a LED chip () to light at another wavelength, which is emitted from the module. The conversion takes place in a portion of a luminescent material (). The color purity of the LED module is enhanced by reducing any leakage of pump light using a reflector in combination with an absorber. In one embodiment, the absorber is integrated as one or several thin absorbing layers between the layers of a multi-layer reflection filter (); this may yield an even higher reduction of pump light leakage from the module.

A light emission diode (LED) assembly, comprising a LED die (), a phosphor layer (), and a filter layer (), wherein said filter layer () is developed in such a manner that light rays with a wavelength of about 400 nm to 500 nm, preferably of about 420 nm to 490 nm, emitted from the LED die () are at least partially reflected depending on their emission angle to the normal on the filter layer (). With the inventive LED assembly it is possible to provide a LED assembly which solves the yellow ring problem without a reduction of the efficiency of the LED assembly.
