Encoding a new version of a data module includes constructing a delta data module having data for providing the new version of the data module. The delta data module may indicate an encoding for copying data at an offset from one of a number of pointers into different versions of the data module. Decoding a delta data module to provide a new version of a data module includes copying, to the new version of the data module, data relative to a target pointer when an encoding in the delta data module indicates a matching pattern relative to the target pointer, and copying, to the new version of the data module, data relative to at least one other pointer when an encoding in the delta data module indicates a matching pattern relative to the at least one other pointer.

Delta compression using multiple pointers

A system and method for automatically updating software components on a running computer system without requiring any interruption of service. A software module is hotpatched by loading a patch into memory and modifying an instruction in the original module to jump to the patch. A coldpatching technique places a coldpatch version of the module on disk for subsequent loading by processes, after hotpatching occurred. The coldpatch has the entry points to its functions at the same relative locations within the module as the hotpatch, which facilitates subsequent hotpatching. A hotpatch and coldpatch are automatically generated by deriving differences between changed and original binary files, and establishing the point to insert the jump. Validation is performed to ensure that the hotpatch is applied to the correct version, and that the coldpatch is replacing the correct version. Version management is also provided to control the number of patches via support rules.

Patching of in-use functions on a running computer system

In a content delivery scheme for target files, one or more recipes for each of the target files are encoded in an index. The index uses a framework that is able to represent content delivery schemes involving static containers, dynamic containers, self-contained containers, containers that are not self-contained, containers with internal delta dependency and containers with no internal delta dependency.

A system and method for providing file data, such as a set of files for updating a computer system, in a self-contained package, in which the package size is significantly reduced via delta compression. A build mechanism examines files to be distributed, and generates a self-contained package containing files and deltas. To this end, a directed graph is built from the sizes of the various base file and delta file possibilities, and a minimum spanning tree computation selects the files that result in the smallest package. A base file may have multiple deltas applied to synthesize multiple files, and any base file may itself have been previously synthesized from another base file and a delta. A client extraction mechanism, optionally provided with the package, works with the contents of the package as directed by a manifest to synthesize target files from the base files and the contained deltas.

System and method for intra-package delta compression of data

A system and method for managing the installation of files on a computing device are provided. A client computing device obtains installation information identifying a version of a baseline installation component stored on the client computing device. The installation information also includes an installation component delta patch that is merged with the baseline installation component to generate an updated installation component. The updated installation component is utilized to install one or more files on the client computing device. Upon completion of the installation, the updated installation component can be deleted.

A system and method for updating one or more files on a computing device are provided. A client computing device obtains update information including an index identifying particular delta patches with specific versions of installed files. Upon selecting which of the applicable updates will be implemented, an update agent on the client computing device performs an inventory to identify which version a file to be updated is installed on the machine. The update agent selects a corresponding delta patch and transmits the request to an update service.

System and method for updating files utilizing delta compression patching

A data compression method and system replaces pairs of symbols in a string of symbols by a single new symbol. A method for selecting the pairs of symbols to be replaced employs a modified greedy algorithm. The method selects a next best pair of symbols for replacement by considering pairs that have a potential for usurping a current best candidate pair of symbols, due to their frequency of occurrence. A minimum savings threshold is evaluated to further avoid exhaustive searches of all possible pairs of symbols.

Method and system for selecting grammar symbols for variable length data compressors

Rather than comparing an old file with a new file to generate a set of patching instructions, and then compressing the patching instructions to generate a compact patch file for transmission to a user, a patch file is generated in a single operation. A compressor is pre-initialized in accordance with the old version of the file (e.g. in an LZ77 compressor, the history window is pre-loaded with the file). The pre-initialized compressor then compresses the new file, producing a patch file from which the new file can be generated. At the user's computer, a parallel process is performed, with the user's copy of the old file being used to pre-initialize a decompressor to which the patch file is then input. The output of the decompressor is the new file. The patch files generated and used in these processes are of significantly reduced size when compared to the prior art. Variations between copies of the old file as installed on different computers are also addressed, so that a single patch file can be applied irrespective of such variations. By so doing, the need for a multi-version patch file to handle such installation differences is eliminated, further reducing the size of the patch file when compared with prior art techniques. Such variations are addressed by 'normalizing' the old file prior to application of the patch file. A temporary copy of the old file is typically made, and locations within the file at which the data may be unpredictable due to idiosyncrasies of the file's installation are changed to known or predictable values.

Method and system for updating software with smaller patch files

A system and method that provides a unique or custom context for a plurality of blocks of data, yet compresses the blocks independently from the others, such that each block is independently decompressible. The method analyzes a collection of blocks for compression, and computes a unique context, such as a Huffman tree, given the distribution of symbols or phrases across all the blocks in the collection. Each block in the collection can be independently decompressed, in any order, using the shared context that is common to the collection.

File update performing comparison and compression as single process

A method and system for downloading software update data for installing a revised software product on a client computer minimizes the amount of update data to be transmitted over the network by downloading only those files needed to put the client computer in the state for installing the product. In the beginning of the downloading process, the client computer obtains from a setup server an initial setup package that includes a setup program and a list of files required for installing the software product. The setup program running on the client computer then determines whether some current or earlier versions of those files required for installation already exist on the client computer, and compiles a request list of files needed for updating the client computer. The client computer sends the request list to a download server, which maintains a collection of update files and patches. In response to the request list, the download server downloads updating files to the client. Depending of the availability of the requested files or other factors, the downloaded files may or may not be exactly those requested. Using the downloaded files, the setup program updates the existing files to provide the set of installation files on the client computer. The desired revised software product is then installed on the client computer.
