A method of storing a phone number within a mobile phone that was received from an information service. The user places a call to an information service to obtain a requested phone number. The requested phone number returned from the information service is detected by the mobile phone and can be stored within the mobile phone. In one embodiment, the requested phone number is returned audibly from the information service to the mobile phone and is detected using voice recognition algorithms to parse the audible response returned from the information service into a series of numbers that make up the requested phone number. The mobile can then prompt the user whether to store the returned phone number permanently and where it should be stored. Another feature prompts the user if he would like the mobile phone to automatically dial the phone number just obtained from the information service. In addition, flags can be set to automatically store and dial the requested phone number without having to prompt the user.

A device comprising a component and an adhesive attached to at least one exterior portion of the component. When the component is on a printed circuit and passed through a reflow operation, the adhesive melts forming a physical bond between the component and the printed circuit. The printed circuit may be a flexible printed circuit or a printed circuit board. The adhesive may melt under and to at least one edge of the component. The adhesive may also melt under and to at least one edge of the component and under and to at least one edge of at least one second component adjacent to the component.

Uniquely decorated devices may be manufactured using high speed production equipment. In one approach, a master piece of artwork is selected. For each decorated part to be fabricated, a portion of the master artwork is selected. Image data for the portion of the master artwork is input to a manufacturing tool, such as a laser etch machine. The manufacturing tool may process each part to have a representation of its corresponding portion of the artwork, resulting in plural parts that each has a unique cosmetic appearance.

Disclosed is a pointing device for facilitating user interaction with an electronic device. The pointing device includes a magnetic disc, a magnetic field over which the magnetic disc laterally travels in response to force applied by a user, and a plurality of sensors to detect the location of the magnetic disc relative to the magnetic field.

A personal electronic device includes a multi-function jack that has at least one contact configured for both power and data connections. In an exemplary embodiment, the jack is based on an industry standard audio or barrel jack for compatibility with standard audio or barrel plugs. The shared power and data contact eliminates the need for personal electronic devices, such as mobile telephones, to have separate connectors and/or custom connectors for different types of peripheral devices.

An adaptor for use with a light-communication device including a frame and a light guide on the frame. The light guide has a first light port assembly to receive a light signal from a light-communication device, a second light port assembly to output a light signal received by the first light port assembly, and a light transmission element for directing a light signal in a predetermined path between the first and second light port assemblies. The adaptor may be used in a system with two or more light-communication devices. Also provided is a method for communicating light signals between light-communication devices.

Electronic device holders, such as vehicle cradles and holsters are provided with optical elements that are configured to overlie and magnify the display panel of an electronic device supported thereby. An elongate, adjustably bendable arm may be utilized to allow a user to maneuver an optical element to any of a plurality of positions relative to an electronic device display panel.

A method and apparatus are provided for electrically connecting to a printed circuit board having first and second faces spaced from each other by a thickness. The connection is formed by inserting an electrical connector into a receptacle formed in the printed circuit board, and, in response to the insertion of the electrical connector, engaging a contact pad carried on the electrical connector with a contact pad carried on the printed circuit board in the receptacle between the first and second faces to urge the contact pads into electrical contact between the first and second faces.

Two pivoting portions of a product are connected by a hinged detent. The hinged detent provides a snap feel when the product halves are closed or opened to an operable angle. It also allows for the placement of wires and connectors within the hinge. The hinged detent design further enables easy vertical axis assembly and provides for one of a multiple of operable angles to be factory-set. In adjustable hinge detents, a dial or similar mechanism can be rotated to adjust and set the desired operable angle to which the hinged product halves will be opened. Locating elements are forcibly disengaged from one set of adjusting recesses in the adjustable hinge, then rotated to different adjusting recesses of the hinge, and finally permitted to reengage the adjustable hinge in the new adjusting recesses. This mechanism permits a multitude of operable angles to be selected. Each time the product portions are reopened, they will automatically open to the previously selected angle. The adjustable hinge detent can be used, for example, to connect two v-keyboard halves, a screen to a laptop base, two components of collapsing headphones, or two parts of an adjustable stand.

A contact assembly provides a reliable contact between a battery pack and an electronic device. The assembly includes a plurality of contact members and an insulator molded to the contact members. The plurality of contact members preferably include a positive contact member and a negative contact member each having a weldable surface and a selectively plated surface. The weldable surfaces are welded to the positive and negative terminals of the battery pack, respectively. The selectively plated surfaces are preferably plated with gold to ensure a good connection between the device and the battery pack. The insulator serves to fix the contact members relative to each other. In addition, the insulator facilitates minimization of the battery pack size by enabling the contacts to be placed very close to each other.

A portable electronic device holder having a housing defining a cradle for holding an electronic device, a battery integrally connected with the housing for powering the electronic device in response to placement of the electronic device within the cradle of the housing, and a connection for interconnecting power circuitry of the electronic device with the battery. The housing further includes a charger for charging the battery incorporated therewithin. The holder may also include an attachment for attaching the housing to a user, such as, for example, a belt clip.

A power control latch which is connected to an electronic device having first and second parts which are movable relative to each other between a first position and a second position. The power control latch includes first and second electrically conductive members and a nonconductive member. The first and second electrically conductive members are connected to the first part of the electronic device and the nonconductive member is connected to, and extends outwardly from, the second part. When the first and second parts of the electronic device are in the first position, the first and second electrically conductive members are electrically connected to conduct power. When the first and second parts of the electronic device are in the second position, the nonconductive member extends between the first and second conductive members and prevents electrical connection therebetween.

Disclosed is a one piece lightguide structure having at least two lightguides, one of which can be movable with respect to the other. In a preferred embodiment, the lightguides are interconnected by a restricted light path structure, in a preferred embodiment, a light dissipating spring which mechanically interconnects the two lightguides but serves to restrict any light transmitted from one lightguide to the other. The light path restriction is created by dispersing any light transmitted along the spring, reflecting light back towards the originating lightguide, trapping light in various larger cross-sectional area portions or varying combinations of all three. In a preferred embodiment, a light dissipating spring comprising the three large cross-sectional areas connected in series between a fixed lightguide and a movable lightguide by smaller cross-section portions which serve to mechanically interconnect two lightguides.
