The present teachings provide for a power transmitting component including a housing, a clutch, a vent, and a dam. The vent can fluidly couple a first and second cavity. The dam can include a door member. Rotation of the outer carrier through a fluid in the second cavity can sling a portion of the fluid toward the vent to cause the portion of the fluid to be transferred from the second cavity, through the vent, and to the first cavity. When the piston is in a first position, the door member can be in a closed position to limit fluid flow from the first cavity to the second cavity. When the piston is in a second position, the door member can be in an open position to allow fluid to flow from the first cavity to the second cavity.

Disclosed is a range shift mechanism in the form of a floating planetary gear assembly for a transfer case. The range shift mechanical according to the present invention can improve power efficiency and generate low noises by suppressing gear rotation in a high range mode of the range shift system.

A dual clutch transmission with multiple gears operatively coupled thereto, comprises: first and second input shafts coaxially arranged to each other; a first clutch operatively coupled with the first input shaft to drive the transmission with a gear selected from a first set of non-consecutively numbered gears; a second clutch coaxially arranged with the first clutch and operatively coupled with the second input shaft to drive the transmission with a gear selected from a second set of non-consecutively numbered gears; first and second clutch actuating devices, each including an actuator and a pivot member, each pivot member operatively coupled between the actuator and a clutch applicator of cylindrical shape to move its clutch applicator for clutch operation; and a plurality of first and second clutch levers received in a clutch retaining housing in a circularly and alternately arranged pattern. The first and second clutch levers are configured to move the first and second clutches, respectively. The cylindrically shaped clutch applicator of the first clutch actuating device is disposed coaxially with the cylindrically shaped clutch applicator of the second clutch actuating device, and the first clutch levers and the second clutch levers can operate independently to each other upon movement of the first clutch applicator or the second clutch applicator to perform a selective clutch operation between the first and second clutches.

A dual clutch apparatus for a dual clutch transmission having a first input shaft and a second input shaft includes: a first clutch of generally annular shape; a second clutch of generally annular shape disposed coaxially with the first clutch; and, a plurality of first and second clutch levers received in a clutch retaining housing in a circularly arranged pattern with the first clutch levers alternately interleaved with the second clutch levers; in which the first clutch includes a clutch finger plate of generally annular shape, the clutch finger plate having a plurality of fingers extending in the axial direction of the first clutch and through an outer circumference of the second clutch and configured to push a first clutch application plate of generally annular shape which is coupled with the first clutch levers for clutch application of the first clutch, and a friction plate arranged next to the first clutch application plate and coupled with a hub of the first clutch, the hub of the first clutch coupled with the first input shaft.

A gear shifting device for shifting gears of a transmission includes: at least one guide rail each extending in a longitudinal axis; a plurality of shift effecting members configured to move a plurality of corresponding sliding sleeves coupled to the guide rail for shifting gears, the shift effecting members each having a terminal end portion with a finger receiving opening formed therein, the finger receiving opening extending in a direction generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the guide rail; and a shift shaft extending in a direction generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the guide rail, the shift shaft having a shift finger coupled thereto. The shift shaft is rotatable to pivotally position the shift finger at locations aligned with the finger receiving openings of the shift effecting members, and is also displaceable in the longitudinal direction in the finger receiving openings to move the shift effecting members to effect a gear shifting operation.

A transfer case for vehicles comprises: a first output shaft; a second output shaft; a clutch assembly disposed at the second output shaft, the clutch assembly including inner and outer drum members, one of the inner and outer drum members rotatable in association with rotation of the first output shaft and the other one of the inner and outer drum members coupled with the second output shaft, the clutch assembly further including a plurality of frictional clutch plates, the frictional clutch plates formed of at least one frictional clutch plate coupled with the inner drum member and at least one frictional clutch plate coupled with the outer drum member; an actuator shaft rotatably coupled with an actuator; and a clutch actuator means coupled with the actuator for applying axial force to the frictional clutch plates to transmit a drive torque of the first output shaft to the second output shaft.

A gear shifting device for shifting gears of a transmission comprises: at least one guide rail each extending in a longitudinal axis thereof; a plurality of shift effecting members (e.g., shift forks or the like) configured to move a plurality of corresponding sliding sleeves coupled to the guide rail for shifting gears upon actuation of a shift actuator, the shift effecting members each having a terminal end portion with a finger receiving opening formed therein, the finger receiving opening extending in a direction generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the guide rail; and a shift shaft extending in a direction generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the guide rail, the shift shaft having a shift finger coupled thereto. The shift shaft is rotatable to pivotally position the shift finger at locations aligned with the finger receiving openings of the shift effecting members, and is also displaceable in the longitudinal direction in the finger receiving openings to move the shift effecting members to effect a gear shifting operation. Methods of shifting gears with a gear shifting device are also disclosed.

A transfer case for selectively coupling a secondary driveline with a primary driveline comprises: a first output shaft; a second output shaft; a clutch assembly disposed at the second output shaft, the clutch assembly including inner and outer drum members, one of the inner and outer drum members rotatable in association with rotation of the first output shaft and the other one of the inner and outer drum members coupled with the second output shaft, the clutch assembly further including a plurality of frictional clutch plates, the frictional clutch plates formed of at least one frictional clutch plate coupled with the inner drum member and at least one frictional clutch plate coupled with the outer drum member; an actuator shaft rotatably coupled with an actuator; and a clutch actuator means coupled with the actuator for applying axial force to the frictional clutch plates to transmit a drive torque of the first output shaft to the second output shaft. The clutch actuator means can be a pivot lever pivotally moveable in association with rotation the actuator shaft coupled with the actuator for said applying the axial force to the frictional clutch plates, or can be a sliding lever moveable in an axial direction of the actuator shaft in association with rotation the actuator shaft coupled with the actuator.

A power transfer assembly for use in a motor vehicle and having a hydraulic coupling operable to transfer drive torque to a driveline in response to slip. The hydraulic coupling includes a transfer clutch, a clutch operator for engaging the transfer clutch, a fluid actuation system including a fluid pump for controlling movement of the clutch operator, and a magnetorheological pump clutch capable of selectively shifting the fluid pump between operative and inoperative states.

A drive axle assembly includes first and second axleshafts connected to a pair of wheels and a drive mechanism operable to selectively couple a driven input shaft to one or both of the axleshafts. The drive mechanism includes a differential, a speed changing unit operably disposed between the differential assembly and one of the first and second axleshafts, and first and second mode clutches. The first mode clutch is operable to decrease the rotary speed of the second axleshaft which, in turn, causes a corresponding increase in the rotary speed of the first axleshaft. The second mode clutch is operable to increase the rotary speed of the second axleshaft so as to cause a decrease in the rotary speed of the first axleshaft. A control system controls actuation of both mode clutches.

A drive axle assembly includes first and second axleshafts connected to a pair of wheels and a drive mechanism operable to selectively couple a driven input shaft to one or both of the axleshafts. The drive mechanism includes a differential, a speed changing unit operably disposed between the differential assembly and the first and second axleshafts, first and second mode clutches and a brake unit. The first mode clutch is operable to increase the rotary speed of the first axleshaft which, in turn, causes a corresponding decrease in the rotary speed of the second axleshaft. The second mode clutch is operable to increase the rotary speed of the second axleshaft so as to cause a decrease in the rotary speed of the first axleshaft. The brake unit is operable to engage the speed changing unit. A control system controls actuation of both mode clutches.

A drive axle assembly includes a pair of axleshafts connected to a pair of wheels, and a drive mechanism for selectively coupling a driven input shaft to one or both of the axleshafts. The drive mechanism includes first and second drive units that can be selectively engaged to control the magnitude of the drive torque transferred and the relative rotary speed between the input shaft and the axleshafts. Each drive unit includes a planetary gearset disposed between the input shaft and its corresponding axleshaft, and a pair of mode clutches that may be activated to cause the planetary gearset to establish different speed ratio drive connections between the input shaft and the axleshaft. A control system including an electronic control unit (ECU) and sensors are provided to control actuation of the clutches so as to control the side-to-side traction characteristics of the drive axle assembly.

A manual transmission includes an input shaft operatively connected to a source of motive power and a countershaft in axially parallel relationship with the input shaft. The manual transmission also includes an output shaft in axially parallel relationship with the counter shaft. The manual transmission further includes a plurality of gear set pairs disposed between the input shaft and the counter shaft such that the gear sets provide different gear ratios for transferring torque from the input shaft to the output shaft, each of the gear sets including a driver gear operatively supported by the input shaft such that the driver gear receives only torque from the source of motive power.

An actuator for selectively causing axial compression of friction elements in a clutch is disclosed. The actuator comprises a pair of beveled wedge washers and a bearing race supported between the washers. The race supports conical bearing rollers in a generally radial orientation. An actuator plate is mounted for rotation relative to the bearing race and includes bearing ramp surfaces that are operable to move the conical bearing rollers radially inwardly thereby forcing the washers to move apart axially and to thereby cause compression of and torque transfer through the friction elements. A clutch including the actuator is well suited for inclusion in a transfer case.
