A flexible and extensible architecture allows for secure searching across an enterprise. Such an architecture can provide a simple Internet-like search experience to users searching secure content inside (and outside) the enterprise. The architecture allows for the crawling and searching of a variety of sources across an enterprise, regardless of whether any of these sources conform to a conventional user role model. The architecture further allows for security attributes to be received at query time, for example, in order to provide real-time secure access to enterprise resources. The user query also can be transformed to provide for dynamic querying that provides for a more current result list than can be obtained for static queries.

Flexible framework for secure search

Techniques are provided for scheduling data operations for a given query based upon a query-cost model that analyzes the cost of scheduling data operations based upon their operation cost and the type of resources needed for the operation. In an embodiment, a database server receives a set of operations for a query. The database server determines a set of leaf operation nodes from the set of data operations, where the set of leaf operation nodes includes operation nodes that do not depend on the execution of other nodes within the set of data operations. The database server compares operation costs between the leaf operation nodes to determine which leaf operation node to insert into a scheduled order set. The database server inserts the leaf operation node into the scheduled order set. Then the database server iteratively determines new leaf operation nodes and performs cost analysis on remaining leaf operation nodes to generate a set of scheduled data operations.

Dynamic operation scheduling for distributed data processing

Techniques are described herein for grouping of operations in local memory of a processing unit. The techniques involve adding a first operation for a first leaf operator of a query execution plan to a first pipelined group. The query execution plan includes a set of leaf operators and a set of non-leaf operators. Each leaf operator of the set of one or more leaf operators has a respective parent non-leaf operator and each non-leaf operator has one or more child operators from among the set of leaf operators or others of the set of non-leaf operators. The techniques further involve determining a memory requirement of executing the first operation for the first leaf operator and executing a second operation for the respective parent non-leaf operator of the first leaf operator. The output of the first operation is input to the second operation. The techniques further involve determining whether the memory requirement is satisfied by an amount of local memory. If it is determined that the memory requirement is satisfied by the amount of local memory the second operation for the respective parent non-leaf operator is added to the first pipelined group. The techniques further involve assigning the first pipelined group to a first thread and the first thread executing the first pipelined group. Executing the first pipelined group involves: storing first output of the first operation in the local memory of the first thread; using the first output as input for the second operation; storing second output of the second operation in the local memory; and moving second output from the local memory to a tier of memory different than the local memory relative to the first thread.

The method includes receiving, at a federated broker, a query from an authorized user, obtaining a plurality of user credentials associated with the authenticated user, wherein each of the plurality of user credentials are used to access at least one source of a plurality of sources, determining a required query format for each of the plurality of sources, translating the query into a plurality of queries formatted according to the required query format of each of the plurality of sources, propagating the plurality of translated queries and the plurality of user credentials to each corresponding source to appear to each corresponding source to be the authorized user, receiving, at the federated broker, results of each of the plurality of queries from each source of the plurality of sources, and consolidating the results of each of the plurality of queries to be displayed in a uniform manner.

Techniques for managing XML data associated with multiple execution units ensure that execution units are able to use XML data coming from other execution units. Such techniques are applicable when, but for the technique, an XML type value is produced in a particular form by one execution unit and is supposed to be consumed by another execution unit that is unable to process data in the particular form, and involves detecting that the foregoing situation exists and annotating information sent to an XML producer execution unit to cause the XML type value to be transformed into a canonical form that can be shared by all relevant execution units.

Secure search performance improvement

A web crawler indexes documents including information about document contents and metadata including information such as a URL. However, some applications rely on URL's that change frequently or are constructed to include user information so that the contents retrieved is customized to the user. An approach is provided for storing generic URL's in an index at crawl time, which are customized for the user at search time. A callback mechanism may be used to dynamically transform the generic URL into a URL that is specific to the user issuing the query and/or includes current information that may change frequently. In this way, when the query or search results are returned to the user, the user receives links that are active and valid for that particular user, directing the user to the appropriate site, application, etc. without requiring continuous updating of a very large index.

Indexing secure enterprise documents using generic references

It is desirable to provide a secure search mechanism to provide for searching over any and all content, such as across an enterprise. A secure search, however, requires access to the secure content repositories holding the data to be searched. In some cases the credentials required to crawl a repository may be extremely sensitive, or the user may be reluctant or unwilling to store user identification information in memory or on disk for any longer than is absolutely necessary. An approach is provided that allows a user or an administrator to provide security credentials to be stored and used only during a crawl, and to erase the credentials from the system when the crawl is complete.

An enterprise-wide query relaxative support vector machine ranking algorithm approach provides enhanced functionality for query execution in a heterogeneous enterprise environment. Improved query results are obtained by adjusting ranking functions using machine learning methods to automatically train ranking functions. The improved query results are obtained using a list of document-query pairs that are modeled as a binary classification training problem, combination function which requires ranking and learning functions to be implemented representing document attributes and metadata utilizing query relaxation techniques and adjusted ranking functions.
