A process for forming a molded polymer resin fiber tube clamp, as well as the tube clamp formed by that process. Continuous top and bottom plies provide increased resistance to delamination/cracking as they sandwich a filler material. The tube clamp is free from exposed fiber ends so than no wear is produced on a tube being clamped.

Polyimide resin and carbon fiber molded tube clamp

A multi-layer seal and washer that provide a seal between a vane stem and a casing in a turbine engine are disclosed. The seal and washer are fabricated from materials such as Teflon fibers and glass fibers and are impregnated with a polyimide resin. The seal and washer are durable and have a low coefficient of friction.

A method enables a variable vane assembly for a gas turbine engine including a casing to be assembled. The variable vane assembly includes a seal assembly and at least one variable vane that includes a platform and a trunnion, wherein the platform extends outwardly from the trunnion. The method comprises coupling a seal assembly journal bushing to the variable vane such that the journal bushing is against the trunnion and between the trunnion and the engine casing, and wherein the journal bushing has a substantially constant diameter extending between a first and a second end of the journal bushing, and positioning a substantially flat first washer on the variable vane ledge to prevent contact between the variable vane assembly and the engine casing.

Methods and apparatus for sealing gas turbine engine variable vane assemblies

A variable stator vane assembly for a gas turbine engine including a bushing that facilitates extending a useful life of the stator vane assembly is described. The stator vane assembly includes a spacer and a vane secured to an engine casing. The bushing is between the spacer and vane, and prevents the spacer and the vane from contacting the engine casing. The bushing is fabricated from several materials formed in a matrix, such that at least a portion of the bushing is electrically conductive. During engine operation, a conductive path is realized through the bushing that discharges electrical charges.

A preferred embodiment of said present invention is a gas turbine engine blade root shim for use between a composite blade root and a wall of a slot for receiving the root in a rotor of the engine. An exemplary embodiment of the shim includes a longitudinally extending base having distal first and second transversely spaced apart ends, first and second longitudinally extending legs acutely angled inwardly towards the base from the first and second ends, and first and second low coefficient of friction coatings on first and second outwardly facing surfaces of the first and second legs, respectively. Among coatings suitable for use in the present invention are polytetrafluoroethylene powder dispersed in a resin binder and other coatings which include polytetrafluoroethylene.

Variable vane seal and washer materials

A platform for a turbofan gas turbine engine that does not limit the rotation capability of adjacent fan blades in the event one of the fan blades is impacted by a foreign object. The platform includes a structural body portion and an integrally formed flowpath surface portion. The structural body portion has a contour that matches that of the adjacent fan blades. The flowpath surface portion defines a pair of wings that extend laterally beyond the structural body portion. The wings are frangible so as to break off if an adjacent fan blade rotates in response to an ingestion event. The platform is made from a composite material using a resin transfer molding process.

A method for making a fiber reinforced composite article includes placing in a forming mold article cavity a preform which includes at least a fiber reinforcement arrangement, such as stacked piles of resin bonded sheets. Closure of the mold defines a matrix reservoir for excess matrix material in fluid flow relationship with the article cavity. Gas pressure applied to the excess matrix material while in the fluid condition forces that material back into the article cavity to nominally eliminate voids, pores and other internal and surface discontinuities from the article.
