A self-setting valve assembly for a power steering gear assembly includes a plug, a first plunger, a second plunger, and a biasing member. The plug extends between a first end and a second end. The plug defines a cavity that is disposed between the first end and the second end, a first bore that extends from the first end to the cavity, and a second bore that extends from the second end to the cavity. The first plunger has a first head that is disposed within the cavity and a first stem that extends from the first head through the first bore. The second plunger has a second head that is disposed within the cavity and a second stem that extends from the first head through the second bore. The biasing member is disposed within the bore and extending between the first head and the second head.

Power steering gear assembly having an end of travel valve assembly

A power steering pump includes, an intake flow channel defined by a first surface; a chamber into which fluid is received; and a plate disposed between the first surface and the chamber. An opening having opposed terminal ends extends through the plate. The intake flow channel is in fluid communication with the chamber through the plate opening and is configured to direct fluid flow through the plate opening into the chamber at a location intermediate and spaced from the terminal ends. The intake flow channel is defined by a bottom surface and a sloped surface extending from the bottom surface toward the plate. The flow channel has a transition zone through which the bottom surface and the sloped surface are joined. The transition zone is located at a position along the intake flow channel at which it and one of the plate opening terminal ends are approximately superposed.

A hydraulic flow return system of a transmission pump in which primary and bypass flows of hydraulic fluid are returned to primary and bypass flow channels, respectively, of a booster nozzle situated adjacent the rotating group at the inlet of the pump for delivery a boosted flow of high pressure fluid to the pump as a result of the incoming bypass flow being passed through a flow restrictor before being recombined with the primary flow, the system is improved by incorporating a bypass valve which senses the back pressure in the incoming bypass flow and operates to open an auxiliary bypass channel in the event that the back pressure exceeds a predetermined control value in order to divert a fraction of the bypass flow around the flow restrictor for delivery to the pump until such time as the back pressure falls below the control value.

Hydraulic pump nozzle and method of use

A hydraulic pump includes a housing, a primary discharge outlet, an auxiliary discharge outlet, and a flow control valve for controlling fluid flow from the primary and auxiliary discharge outlets. A first fluid passageway within the housing passes fluid from a first discharge port to the primary discharge outlet, and a second fluid passageway within the housing passes fluid from a second discharge port to a common port of the flow control valve. In a first position, the valve directs fluid from the second discharge port to the primary discharge outlet. In a second position, the valve diverts fluid from the second discharge port to the auxiliary discharge outlet. The valve may be positioned in response to such operating conditions as excessive pressure differential between the high and low-pressure sides, excessive pump rate of rotation (RPM), or excessive rate of fluid flow, among others.

Dual discharge hydraulic pump and system therefor

A hydraulic transmission fluid supply system for operating a transmission of a vehicle includes a hydraulic pump having an inlet and an outlet communicating with an inlet of the transmission. A filter assembly includes a filter housing having an inlet communicating with a source of hydraulic fluid and a fluid outlet communicating with the inlet of the pump. A check valve is associated with the filter housing inlet to permit only one-way flow of fluid through the system such that in the event the transmission develops an air leak, the fluid is nonetheless maintained in the system and not permitted to back flow through the system.

This invention offers advantages and alternatives over the prior art by providing a dual port hydraulic fixed displacement pump which exhibits improved efficiency by limiting the volume of discharged fluid which is subjected to the line pressure of a hydraulic system through mechanical valve control. According to the present invention, a pair of discharge ports are provided, namely a first discharge port and a second discharge port. Under all operating conditions, e.g., low and high pump speed operating conditions, the fluid flowing within the first discharge port and primary discharge passageway is exposed to the working pressure of the primary line, which represents a high pressure line. The second discharge port fluidly communicates with a secondary discharge passageway which is in selective fluid communication with a low pressure line connected to a low pressure area of the pump (e.g., a reservoir) under first operating conditions and is also in selective communication with the first discharge port and the primary discharge passageway under second operating conditions.
