An ignition system for an internal combustion system has a power source for passing a DC voltage, a push-pull isolating transformer connected to the power source so as to increase the voltage from the power source and convert the DC voltage to AC voltage, a high-voltage transformer having a primary winding connected to an output of the push-pull isolating transformer, and a spark plug connected to a secondary winding of the high-voltage transformer. The high-voltage transformer increases the voltage from the push-pull isolating transformer to a voltage that fires the spark plug.

An ignition coil has a ferromagnetic core with a primary coil surrounding a first portion of the ferromagnetic core and a secondary coil surrounding the second portion of the ferromagnetic core. The secondary coil is wrapped around a bobbin. The bobbin has an interior receiving the second portion of the ferromagnetic core. A form is interposed between the secondary coil and the second portion of the ferromagnetic core. The form extends longitudinally along the second portion of the ferromagnetic core. The form is of a non-ferrous metal material.

An ignition system for an internal combustion engine has a power source, a transformer having a first primary winding and a second primary winding and a secondary winding, a connector extending from the secondary winding so as to connect with a terminal of a spark plug, and a multi-strike circuit cooperative with the electronic spark timing circuit so as to fire the transformer with multiple strikes between the falling edge and the rising edge. A booster circuit is cooperative at the electronic spark timing circuit so as to collect and store energy from the power source while the electronic spark timing circuit fires the transformer. A delay circuit fires the transformer at a time subsequent to the falling edge and before the rising edge.

Multi-strike ignition system for an internal combustion engine

An ignition coil has a ferromagnetic core, a primary coil surrounding a portion of the core and wrapped helically with a conductor, a winding form having partitions extending outwardly of a tubular surface of the winding form, and a secondary coil wrapped on the winding form. The partitions define a plurality of annular coil chambers including central chambers and end chambers. The end chambers have a spiral land. The secondary coil includes coil sections in each of the plurality of coil chambers. The secondary coil has coil turns in the end chambers in a spiral configuration on the spiral land and increasing progressively in diameter toward the central chambers.

Ignition coil having a winding form

A method of firing a spark plug of an internal combustion engine includes supplying AC power to the spark plug in which the AC power has a waveform with a rising edge and a falling edge, activating the spark plug during the rising edge of the waveform, and deactivating the spark plug during the falling edge of the waveform. This method further includes connecting an engine control module to an ignition coil and connecting the engine coil to the spark plug. The firing of the ignition coil mirrors the square waveform of AC power from the engine control module. A battery is connected to the engine control module.

Electronic spark timing control system for an AC ignition system

A method of firing at least one spark plug of an internal combustion engine include supplying AC power to the spark plug in which the AC power has a waveform with a rising edge and a falling edge, activating the spark plug during the rising edge of the waveform, and deactivating the spark plug during the falling edge of the waveform. This method further includes connecting an engine control module and a vehicle power supply to at least one AC ignition coil and connecting the AC ignition coil to the spark plug or spark plugs. The firing duration of the AC ignition coil or transformer mirrors a digital square waveform duration from the engine control module.

An ignition coil has a core with a longitudinal axis, a secondary winding extending around the core, a sleeve extending around the core, a primary winding wrapped around the sleeve, and a controller connected to the primary winding so as to oscillate alternating current to said primary winding. The secondary winding has a high-voltage end and a low-voltage end. The primary winding is in spaced longitudinal relationship from the secondary winding. Specifically, the primary winding is located longitudinally away from the high-voltage end of the secondary winding. A bobbin is positioned over and around the core. The secondary winding is wrapped around at least a portion of the bobbin.

Ignition coil for passing alternating current to a spark plug

An extender for connecting a high-voltage source to a spark plug has a spring adapted to electrically connect with the high-voltage source and the spark plug, a tube having said spring positioned within an interior passageway thereof, and a boot affixed over an exterior of the tube. The boot is formed of a material having a rigidity less than a rigidity of a material of the tube. The boot has a first end adapted to be connected with the high-voltage source and a second end adapted to be connected to the spark plug such that the spring is in direct electrical connection with the spark plug and the high-voltage source. The tube has one end that is spaced inwardly of the first end of the boot and an opposite end of the spaced inwardly of the second end of the boot.

High-voltage extender for connecting a spark plug to a high-voltage source

An extender for connecting a high-voltage source to a spark plug has a conductive member, a tube having an interior passageway in which the conductive member is positioned therein, and a boot affixed over an exterior of the tube. The boot is formed of a material having a rigidity less than a rigidity of a material of the tube. The boot has a first end adapted to connect with the high-voltage source and a second end adapted to be connected to the spark plug such that the conductive member is in electrical connection with the spark plug and the high-voltage source. The conductive member includes a spring that is adapted to electrically connect with the high-voltage source and the spark plug.

Semi-rigid high-voltage extender

An ignition system for an internal combustion engine has a power source, a transformer having first and second primary windings and a secondary winding, a connector extending from the secondary winding and adapted so as to connect with a terminal of the spark plug of the internal combustion engine, and electronic spark timing circuit cooperative with the transformer so as to activate and deactivate voltage to the first and second primary windings. The first and second primary windings are connected to the power source such that the transformer produces an alternating voltage output from the secondary winding of between 1 kHz and 100 kHz and a voltage of at least 20 kV. A forced push-pull inverter is cooperative with the electronic spark timing circuit so as to fix a frequency of voltage to the first and second primary windings.

Forced frequency ignition system for an internal combustion engine

An extender for connecting a high voltage source to a spark plug has a conductive rod with one end suitable for electrical connection to the high voltage source and a second end suitable for electrical connection to the spark plug, and a sleeve injection-molded over the conductive rod so as to be in void-free relation with an exterior surface of the conductive rod. The conductive rod has a first end extending outwardly therefrom. The sleeve defines a spark plug-receiving receptacle at the second end of the conductive rod. An O-ring is received in a notch formed adjacent to the first end of the conductive rod. An O-ring is received in a notch formed around the inner wall of the receptacle. A spring is affixed to the second end of the conductive rod.

High voltage extender

An ignition coil having a core with a first leg and a second leg, a first primary winding arranged over the first leg, a second primary winding arranged over the second leg, a first secondary winding arranged over the first primary winding, a second secondary winding arranged over the second primary winding, and a spark plug terminal electrically connected to one end of the second secondary winding. The first primary winding is connected in series to the second primary winding. The first secondary winding is connected in series to the second secondary winding. The core is of a laminated steel construction. The first and second secondary windings are progressively wound in multiple layers over respective bobbins.

Ignition coil with driver

An ignition system for an internal combustion engine having a transformer with a primary winding adapted to be connected to a power supply and a second winding adapted to be connected to a spark plug of the internal combustion engine, and a controller interconnected to the transformer so as to activate and deactivate the output of the transformer. The transformer serves to produce an output from the secondary winding having a frequency of between 1 KHz and 100 KHz and a voltage of at least 20 kilovolts. In particular, the transformer produces an output of an alternating current having a high voltage sine wave reaching at least 20 kilovolts. A voltage regulator is connected to the power supply and to the transformer so as to provide a constant DC voltage input to the transformer. The transformer produces power of constant wattage from the output of the secondary winding during the activation by the controller. The transformer is connected to the spark plug and to the controller so as to produce an arc of controllable duration across an electrode of the spark plug. This duration is selected from between 0.5 milliseconds and 4.0 milliseconds. A battery is the power supply which is connected to the primary winding of the transformer. This battery produces a variable voltage of between 5 and 15 volts.

Ignition system for an internal combustion engine

An ignition system for an internal combustion engine having a transformer with a primary winding adapted to be connected to a power supply and a secondary winding adapted to be connected to a spark plug of the internal combustion engine, and a controller interconnected to the transformer so as to activate and deactivate the output of the transformer. The transformer serves to produce an output from the secondary winding having a frequency of between 1 KHz and 100 KHz and a voltage of at least 20 kilovolts. In particular, the transformer produces an output of an alternating current having a high voltage sine wave reaching at least 20 kilovolts. This duration is selected from between 0.5 milliseconds and 4.0 milliseconds. A battery is the power supply which is connected to the primary winding of the transformer. This battery produces a variable voltage of between 5 and 15 volts.

Ignition system with clamping circuit for use in an internal combustion

An automotive ignition system transformer including a ferromagnetic core, a primary coil and a secondary coil. The secondary windings are wrapped on a tubular insulating winding form or bobbin with annular radial portions defining a plurality of annular coil chambers including a plurality of central chambers and at least one end chamber. The end chamber defines a spiral land that proceeds both axially toward the respective end and radially outward for three or more complete turns. The respective end turns of the coil are wrapped one turn of coil on each turn of the spiral land so that successive turns of the end portions of the secondary coil are both axially and radially spaced from one another sufficiently to minimize arcing.
