A coupling nut retention apparatus 10 for an electrical connector comprises a generally cylindrical coupling nut 20 having an aperature 24 therein for telescopically receiving a cylindrical housing 40 and an annular flange 30 depending therefrom. The housing 40 has a hole 50 in the front end 46 thereof for receiving a retaining ball 80. An insulator 60 having a rear annular flange 66 depending therefrom is telescopically received by an aperature 44 in the cylindrical housing 40 and has an axial keyway 74 therein that is engaged by said retaining ball 80. The annular flanges, 30 and 66 respectively, of the coupling nut 20 and the insulator 60 abut the retaining ball 80 to prohibit forward motion of said coupling nut 20.

A fastener has a head portion with a torque accepting surface and a cylindrical recess on an external surface thereof defining a pair of axially spaced annular shoulders for acceptance in a circular fastener accepting aperture in a connector component. The aperture has a counterbore for the acceptance and seating of the head portion of the fastener and a channel extending radially of a longitudinal axis of the aperture therein for the acceptance of the fastener in translation, the channel having parallel shoulders spaced slightly greater than the diameter of the cylindrical recess in the head portion of the fastener but less than the minimum diameter of at least one of the shoulders thereon.

Fastener retention system

A floating escutcheon prevents contact damage during mating and unmating of pin and socket connectors and comprises a hollow member slidably supported relative to one of the connectors and having a central aperture for the acceptance of the other connector in telescoping relationship only when the angle between a central axes of the pins and sockets is less than a predetermined angle.

Coaxial electrical connector

A pin element of the type used in a multiple pin electrical connector comprises an inner conductive portion formed of three helically wound oxygen free copper wires, and an outer conductive portion formed of a cluster of equal diameter outer wires helically wound around the inner portion for frictionally engaging a socket. From 25% to 70% of the outer wires are formed of beryllium copper and the remaining outer wires are formed of oxygen free copper to reduce engagement forces while maintaining minimum separation forces.

Twist pin

A releasable key arrangement for an edgeboard connector includes a support member having a bore extending completely through the support member. A polarizing key is mountable to the support member. A threaded retaining member is normally mounted in the key and threadedly connectible to the support member to connect the key thereto. Threads on the retaining member are short enough in the axial direction to be disposed externally of the key when the key has been connected to the support member. Alternatively, the retaining member can be rotatably mounted within the support member and constrained against axial movement, and is threadedly securable to the key. A leader pin and leader bushing are connectible to the connectors to assure proper alignment of contact elements during initial testing. The leader pin is automatically adjustable to a position of alignment with the leader bushing in response to initial connection of the connectors and is then fixed in place to maintain such position of alignment to facilitate subsequent reconnection of the connectors.

Releasable key arrangement for an electrical connector

The disclosure relates to a miniature high density connector. Like connector housings, termed 'hermaphroditic' in the industry in that each contains male and female pins and sockets, are constructed and mated in a manner that maximizes electrical and mechanical integrity yet minimizes size. A pair of like, elongated insulated housings of generally U-shaped transverse cross section have a plurality of aligned closely spaced bores with male electrical contacts supported therein in one leg and a plurality of closely spaced tubular female contacts in the bight portion of each housing, the housings being adapted to mate with one another so that the male and female contacts are directly supported by the bores in one leg of each housing.
