The specification discloses improved alkyd-based ink vehicles for lithographic inks. An ink vehicle according to the invention may contain a rosin ester resin, an ink solvent and from about 1 to about 30% by weight alkyd resin comprising the reaction product of a monounsaturated cyclic diacid anhydride, a polyol and a tall oil fatty acid. The ink vehicle enables faster ink drying and improved pigment wetting without significant adverse affects on other properties of ink formulations such as misting and volatility.

Alkyd-based ink vehicles and ink compositions

A skill based game employing kickers to direct coins falling over the edge of a catcher plate to a player's hopper. The players deposit coins in a slot which directs the coins to a first catcher plate. Coins are pushed over the edge of this catcher plate to a second catcher plate where they are further pushed toward the edge of the second catcher plate. As coins accumulate, coins may fall over the edge of the second catcher plate. Kickers are disposed below the second catcher plate under a player's control. If a player employs the kicker correctly, the coins falling over the edge of the second catcher plate are directed to a player's hopper. The specification discloses an improved ink vehicle for lithographic ink formulations. The ink vehicle contains a high viscosity primary resin component and a co-resin which is an acid catalyzed rosin or modified rosin ester. As contrasted with an ink vehicle containing a base catalyzed rosin ester co-resin, vehicles containing the acid catalyzed rosin ester co-resin exhibit substantially lower water pick up rates which improve the emulsification properties of an ink formulation containing the vehicle. The specification also discloses a method for making an ink vehicle having improved water emulsification properties.

The specification discloses a method for treating a pigment presscake containing pigment and water to remove the water therefrom. The method is carried out by contacting the presscake with a flushing agent containing an uncatalyzed or acid catalyzed rosin ester and an ink oil to provide a mixture containing the pigment, the flushing agent and water which is then separated from the mixture by well known separation techniques such as decanting to provide a flushed pigment. The specification also discloses a flushing agent and an ink composition containing the uncatalyzed or acid catalyzed rosin ester.

An ink vehicle composition is provided comprising a polymeric type resin binder component and a terpene dimer oil. In an alternate embodiment the compositions further include an additional oil selected from linseed oil, soya bean oil, tung oil, or other oils having drying characteristics defined by an Iodine value greater than 120. Advantageously, the compositions contain a reduced amount of petroleum distillate solvent and lower volatile organic compounds (VOC) than conventional ink vehicles. As an ink vehicle the compositions are further incorporated into ink formulations. The varnish compositions are also used as an overprint varnish on a substrate surface.

A process for producing a gelled ink vehicle for heatset printing including the sequential steps of first mixing a modified rosin ester and a liquid alkyd resin and a fatty acid ester solvent, reserving some of the solvent for later use, which is then heated and stirred until the modified rosin ester is dissolved. A gellant is optionally added, and the reaction mixture is maintained at temperature. A non-optional first gellant is then added to the reaction mixture. The reaction is allowed to progress, after which the balance of the solvent, which was withheld previously, is added. The vehicle is recovered from the reaction vessel. The process produces a vehicle that has a stronger gel structure than traditional ink vehicle gels.
