A machine and method for making bags is described and includes a web traveling from an input section to a rotary drum, to an output section. The rotary drum includes at least one seal bar, having a first sealing zone, and an adjacent weakening zone. The weakening zone may be a heated perforator, includes a heating wire, or be disposed to create an auxiliary sealed area. The heating wire can have connected thereto, a source of power that is an adjustable voltage or magnitude, and/or pulsed, and/or a feedback loop. The heating wire ay be an NiCr wire and make intermittent contact with the web and be disposed in an insert. The weakening zone may create a line of weakness that is uniform or varies in intensity, is a separating zone, or includes a heat film, a toothed blade, a row of pins, a source of air, or a source of vacuum. The sealing zones ma include temperature zones, cartridge heaters, cooling air, or hated air, or a source of ultrasonic, microwave or radiative energy.

Method and apparatus for making bags

A method and apparatus for making bags from a film that follows a film path through a bag machine includes an input section located on the film path, a sealing section located on the film path downstream of the input section, an output section located on the film path downstream of the sealing section, and a controller, connected to control the sealing section. The sealing section includes a sealer that includes a heater block and a manifold. There is an air flow path from the heater block to the manifold. Air is heated in the heater block in response to a control signal provided by the controller to the heater block. The heated air is provided through the air path to the manifold. A temperature sensor is disposed in at least one of the air path and the manifold.

Air is heated in the heater block in response to a control signal provided by the controller to the heater block. The heated air is provided through the air path to the manifold. A folder and method for folding plastic bags includes at least one folding station. The folding station has a folding point where an input, an output and a storage portion meet. The bag travels in the input portion in a different direction than in the storage portion. The output direction is substantially the same as the input direction. A turning air source is disposed to direct the bag into the storage portion and an air source is disposed to direct the bag into the output section. A fin helps guide the bag into the output portion. A turning roll disposed above the turning point, and imparts motion to the bag, generally in the storage direction. A second folding station, similar to the first, is downstream the first folding station. The output direction for the first station is the same as the input direction for the second station, and the bag path between the first and second folding stations is substantially linear. A separator located upstream of the folder includes a separator nip formed by separator rolls that are in, and remain in, the film path in one embodiment. A slow-down section includes servo-driven slow down rolls with projections there on.

A method and apparatus for winding film includes guiding a strip of the film through a winding machine to a rotating spindle. At least one deflector and/or at least one source of air, such as a nozzle, is moved to the path of the film downstream from the spindle, and an airhorn is moved to the spindle. The leading edge of the strip is directed into the airhorn by the deflector and/or air from the nozzle, and then directed by air within the airhorn into its own nip. Finally, the strip is wound about the spindle.

A method and apparatus for registration of a seal to a perforation on a plastic bag include a drum for forming a seal on a continuous plastic film and a downstream perforator/cutting station for forming a perforation on the film with respect to the location of the seal. The perforation is properly registered to the seal by sensing the seal location directly, with a seal sensor located near the perforator/cutting station.

Method and apparatus for detecting a seal on a plastic bag

This invention pertains to draw tape equipment, and methods for incorporating draw tapes into plastic and like bags. In general, a continuous plastic web is slit at a slitting station to form layers, and respective free edges. The web then passes to a hole forming station where holes are punched in the top and bottom layers adjacent the free edges. After the holes are punched, edge regions of the top and bottom layers are separated from each other, followed by forming of hems in the separated layers at hem forming stations arranged in parallel with each other. Concurrent with forming of the hems, continuous draw tapes are fed to the hem forming stations and the hems are formed about the draw tapes. The formed hems, with the draw tapes incorporated therein, optionally pass through first temperature control stations where the temperature of the plastic web is controlled to a desired temperature before hem sealing. The formed hems are then sealed to the main bodies of the respective top and bottom layers. Narrow pressure wheels apply pressure to the hot seals to improve seal quality. The sealed hems optionally pass through second temperature control stations to cool the web. The edge regions of the layers are then rejoined, in face-to-face relationship with each other.
