Various embodiments include a method for actuating a camshaft adjuster of an internal combustion engine, in which a current is generated in an electric motor of the camshaft adjuster comprising: measuring an instantaneous strength of the current; calculating a mean value of the measured strength of the current over a predefined elapsed time; measuring a temperature of the camshaft adjuster; comparing the mean value of the measured strength of the current to a threshold value obtained from a characteristic diagram stored in a memory based on the measured temperature and the predefined elapsed time; and reducing the current if the calculated mean value of the strength of the current is higher than the threshold value.

Method and device for actuating a camshaft adjuster

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a method and device for valve travel switching control of an internal combustion engine supercharged by an exhaust-gas turbocharger having a wastegate valve. This valve travel switching control includes: determining the current sensitivity of the charge pressure at a current operating point, at which a current valve travel, a current wastegate valve position and a current charge pressure are present, to changes in the wastegate valve position; determining the minimum valve travel necessary to set a desired operating point, taking into account the determined current sensitivity of the charge pressure; and switching the valve travel if the minimum valve travel necessary to set the internal combustion engine to an extended range with respect to the desired operating point differs from the current valve travel. By means of these measures, the fuel saving operating range of the internal combustion engine is enlarged.

Method and device for valve travel switching control of an internal combustion engine

The disclosed embodiments relate to a method and to a device for controlling an internal combustion engine supercharged by an exhaust-gas turbocharger. The method includes: determining the time duration required for a specific internal combustion engine in operation, at a current operating point and with a predefined combination of settings of switching actuators, to perform an increase of the charge pressure from a current charge pressure to a target charge pressure associated with a target operating point; comparing the determined time duration with a multiplicity of stored time durations, which are each assigned to a predefined different combination of the settings of the switching actuators; and controlling the internal combustion engine with that combination of the settings of the switching actuators which permits the quickest increase of the charge pressure to the target charge pressure.

Method and device for controlling an internal combustion engine supercharged by an exhaust-gas turbocharger

Operation of an internal combustion engine having a wastegate turbocharger

The present disclosure relates to internal combustion engines in general. The teachings may be embodied in methods and devices for operating an internal combustion engine having one or more cylinders which are each assigned gas inlet valves. The method may include: in a first operating state, determining a model temperature of a gas in the intake tract cyclically for a present point in time using a predefined intake pipe model without reference to a present temperature measurement value of the gas; determining a cylinder air mass situated in a respective cylinder after closing the gas exchange valves based at least in part on the model temperature determined for the present point in time; and metering fuel into the respective cylinder based at least in part on the determined cylinder air mass. The model temperature for the present point in time depends at least in part on a model temperature determined for a preceding point in time.

Method and device for operating an internal combustion engine

The present disclosure provides a method for adjusting the operation of an internal combustion engine comprising: determining a gradient of an overrun-air line based on an ambient condition and a current operating point; determining a value for a cylinder air mass situated in a cylinder after closure of the gas exchange valves; and using the determined cylinder air mass to adjust one or more operating parameters of the internal combustion engine. The overrun-air line may correspond to an air mass situated in the respective cylinder after closure of the gas exchange valves at predefined operating temperature for the engine, when the engine is operated briefly without fuel metering and combustion. Determining a cylinder air mass may be based at least in part on the current operating point and the current ambient value of the at least one ambient variable.

An internal combustion engine has a crankcase and a crankcase ventilation system having a switchable shut-off valve, and sensors that detect different operating parameters of the engine, including a load variable of the engine. An estimated load parameter is determined based on the different detected operating parameters using a dynamic model, and a corrective value of a characteristic value is determined as a function of a deviation between the estimated load variable and the detected load variable. To implement a diagnosis, diagnosis switching cycle(s) are controlled, in which the shut-off valve is set to a closed switched position for a first time and set to an open switched position for a second time. A diagnosis value representative of a shut-off valve being in a correct or incorrect state is determined based on a change to the corrective value in response to the one or the plurality of diagnosis switching cycles.

A method is disclosed for checking a valve on an exhaust gas turbocharger of an internal combustion engine, wherein an exhaust gas flow exits the internal combustion engine, a first portion of said flow flowing through a turbine of the exhaust gas turbocharger into an exhaust gas system and a second portion flowing through the valve into the exhaust gas system, wherein said method includes the steps of varying a fuel-to-air ratio in a fresh gas supplied to the internal combustion engine, determining a residual oxygen content in the exhaust gas system, and determining that the valve is defective if a variation of the residual oxygen content occurs in a manner different than a predetermined manner of the variation of the fuel-to-air ratio in the fresh gas. A device for checking the valve can be integrated into an integrated engine control unit of the internal combustion engine.

Checking an exhaust gas flap

In a method and device for operating an internal combustion engine with an intake tract, a switching device for modifying an effective intake pipe length and/or an effective intake tract volume is arranged. By a dynamic intake tract model an estimated intake pipe pressure is determined. The dynamic model is adapted dependent on a trimming value. If a switching position modification is controlled, an estimated old position intake pipe pressure on the one hand is determined with the previous switching position and preventing of the adaptive trimming value adjustment and on the other hand an estimated new position intake pipe pressure is determined with the modified switching position and prevention of the adaptive trimming value adjustment and dependent on a correlation check of the estimated old position pressure and the estimated new position pressure with respect to the measured pressure an actual switching position of the switching device is identified.

An internal combustion engine has an intake tract having a compressor. A verification is performed as to whether at least one predefined activation condition is met. A boost pressure (PUT) downstream of the compressor is sensed or determined. An adaptation characteristic curve or adaptation characteristic map (KF_AD) is adapted as a function of a rotational speed (N) of the internal combustion engine and the boost pressure (PUT) if the at least one actuation condition is met. A gradient is determined that is representative of a gradient of the adaptation characteristic curve or adaptation map (KF_AD). From the determined gradient, conclusions are drawn with respect to a fault in the intake tract of the internal combustion engine.

Method and device for diagnosing an intake tract of an internal combustion engine

Actual values of a load variable are detected by a sensor during active model trimming under different valve pressure conditions, and a model of estimated values is created. Trimming values of a model parameter are determined depending on detected and modeled values such that when the model parameter is trimmed, the modeled values approximate the detected values. A function is determined depending on the different pressure conditions and approximated to the trimming values. At different pressure conditions first lambda control values are detected. A first controller value fitted function is determined depending on the pressure conditions and approximated. When the model trimming mode is not active, second lambda control values are detected at different pressure conditions. A second controller value fitted function is determined depending on the pressure conditions and is approximated. An error of the intake system is detected depending on the fitted functions.

The precision of an intake manifold model for a supercharged internal combustion engine can be improved, wherein a first pressure value in the inlet tract () downstream of a throttle valve () and upstream of a compressor () and second pressure value () downstream of the compressor () are calculated by means of the intake manifold model. Furthermore, a first reference pressure and a second reference pressure are recorded by two pressure sensors (). It is determined whether the internal combustion engine () is operating in charging mode or not. The intake manifold model is then corrected on a difference between the first pressure value and the first reference value and a difference between the second pressure value and the second reference value depending on whether the operating mode is the charging mode or not.

Method for operating a forced-induction internal combustion engine

An internal combustion engine has an intake system () and an exhaust gas system (). An exhaust turbocharger of the internal combustion engine has a compressor () arranged in the intake system () and a turbine () arranged in the exhaust gas system () of the internal combustion engine for driving the compressor (). In order to diagnose the intake system (), a charge pressure (PHS_AIC_DOWN) of the compressor () is determined in a predetermined operating state of the internal combustion engine. A leakage of the intake system () downstream of the compressor () is recognized if the determined charge pressure (PHS_AIC_DOWN) is lower than the predetermined base charge pressure (PUT_BAS) in the predetermined operating state.
