A system and method is disclosed for monitoring current consumption of various subsystems and applications and adjusting functional parameters to ensure a constant current drain from the battery. The constant current drain can be dynamically adjusted based on a predetermined amount of battery life. A user can determine the amount of battery life to be required and the system adjusts current consumption of various subsystem components and applications to provide consistent and predictable battery life.

According to an embodiments, a system and method for managing electromagnetic interference in an electronic charging unit is disclosed. The operating frequencies of multiple electronic devices interfacing with the electronic charging unit may be dynamically altered to manage electromagnetic interference from each electronic device such that the aggregated electromagnetic interference from all electronic devices remains within predetermined limits.

A handheld device is configured with a mode indicator to provide an easily seen indication of a defined mode of operation. A command may be received by the handheld device to enter the defined mode of operation. After entering the defined mode of operation, the device may set one or more specific pixels on a display of the handheld device to a predefined color indicative of the defined mode of operation. The mode indicator on the handheld is illuminated by transporting colored light generated by the one or more specific pixels to the mode indicator.

A battery powered device is configured to allow the device to be stored for extended periods of time with a lithium battery installed and operable. An electronic switch is coupled between the battery and processing logic of the device and is biased off to block all current flow to the processing logic while the device is in a storage state. A user may perform a simple action to overcome the bias such that the electronic switch is turned on and allows current to flow to the processing logic in an operational state. Later, the user may perform another simple action to restore the bias such that the electronic switch is turned off to return the device to the storage state in which essentially no current is drained from the battery.

A directional controller for a device is provided. The directional controller consists of keypad contacts, a keyboard, and a button. The keypad contacts are on a printed circuit board. The keyboard has more than four keys and each key is disposed adjacent to one of the keypad contacts. The button is operable for pivoting engagement with the more than four keys to promote contact between the more than four keys and the adjacent one of the keypad contacts.
