An orthopedic table for supporting a patient in a desired position includes a support for the upper body of the patient and a support for the sacrum of the patient that move together transversely of the longitudinal axis of the table. The table permits positioning or repositioning of a patient on the table without causing the patient to experience undue physical trauma. The table affords convenient access by a surgeon to all parts of the patient's body. The table also permits improved examination of the patient's body with image-amplification equipment.

An apparatus for simultaneously transporting a plurality of wheeled carriers is provided. First and second end frames are interconnected by central spine elements from which extend a plurality of arms which define discrete cells configured to accept the individual carriers. Straps between the end frames and arms or between arms are provided to secure the carriers to the transportation apparatus. In use, the wheeled carriers may be moved as a group while allowing a carrier to be removed from or inserted into any cell without disrupting the other carriers and without necessitating the carriers themselves being placed on a larger wheeled carrier for transport.

A surgical table having simplified joint mechanisms made possible by the use of two offset columns for support and positioning of the table surface. Each column is attached to the surface at two points and is adapted for individual extension and retraction. The columns extend vertically from a base to the surface. The columns and base are positioned such that there is adequate clearance during surgery for use of auxiliary apparatus such as image amplification equipment.

Illuminator apparatus and reflective optical methods directed to meeting the stringent requirements of surgical lighting and similar requirement uses. In the optical system, axially symmetrical light source means and multiple reflectors project light rays in a converging light pattern of uniform light intensity. The angled approach of light to the illuminated area reduces shadow formation and forms a shadow-free zone for location of fixture handling and pattern controls. Heat projection is reduced or minimized optically and the physical arrangement of the support structure provides for removal of heat from the area. Color correction, if required, can be achieved optically without relying on increase in or control of source intensity.
