An automated banking machine operates to carry out financial transfers responsive to data read form data bearing records. The machine includes a card reader that operates to read data from user cards. The card data corresponds to financial accounts. The automated banking machine further includes a cash dispenser. The machine is operative to dispense cash to an authorized user based on identifying data including card data, and to cause a financial transfer from an account corresponding to card data through communication with at least one remote computer. The machine is operative to authorize the installation, use, and/or configuration of automated banking machine software applications and components.

A card activated cash dispensing automated banking machine is operative to authorize the installation, use, and/or configuration of ATM software applications and components. The machine may be provided with either an authorization key or a configuration certificate that is generated by a licensing authority. The machine is operative to authenticate the key or certificate prior to granting a user permission to install, run, and/or configure the software. The machine is operative to authenticate a configuration certificate by evaluating a digital signature associated with the configuration certificate. An authorization key may be authenticated by comparing it to a second authorization key generated responsive to inputted license information and one-way hash functions. The key or certificate may be associated with a plurality of configuration rules which specify the configuration software components and parameters for specific ATM software and hardware.

A method of updating a configuration editing system for generating ATM configuration data is provided. The method may include generating configuration editor DLLs. ATM configuration editor software may be operative to detect new configuration editor DLLs and provide to a user a selectable listing of import/export functions responsive to the configuration editor DLLs detected. The steps for generating the configuration editor DLLs may include coding for the DLL, a first function capable of returning a description of an ATM configuration data, a second function capable of opening at least one file that comprises at least one ATM configuration data record, a third function capable of reading at least one ATM configuration data record from the at least one file, a fourth function capable of writing at least one ATM configuration record to the at least one file, and a fifth function capable of closing the at least one file.
