Crosslinkers of an amide or thiocarbamate of 7-nitroindoline were prepared with at least two attached reactive groups for crosslinking capability. The photo-cleavability of the invented crosslinkers is based on the known photolysis behavior of N-acyl-7-nitroindolines, and the photolysis behavior of amides and thiocarbamates of 7-nitroindolines. These crosslinkers enable crosslinking of biopolymers, which can be reversed by illumination with light.

Photocleavable nitroindoline-based crosslinkers

Macromolecular imprinted silica particles ('MIP') in the presence of polymer grafted carbon black are disclosed. The disclosed molecular imprinted beads can detect disease in body fluids. For the silica gel matrix, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was used as the backbone monomer and 3-aminopropy/triethoxysilane (APS) as a functional monomer. Carbon black was added to the sol-gel process, yielding black silica particles. Furthermore, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used as a structure-directing agent to increase network diffusion of the template. A total of 16 MIPs were synthetized in parallel with variables that evaluate the role of key reactants in the synthesis procedure. Agglomeration tests were performed with all 16 MIPs in the presence of their template, alongside their respective controls using only phosphate buffered saline ('PBS'). Each of the MIPs was evaluated using a novel device capable of simultaneously measuring up to four samples for near infrared transmission.

Molecular imprinted colored silica beads

Methods and devices for molecular imprinting include a molecular imprinting synthesis and matching a physiological pH of a template utilized in the molecular imprinting synthesis to achieve molecular imprinting. Molecular imprinting can be achieved by matching the physiological pH of the template used in a molecular imprinting synthesis. Furthermore, electrostatic charges can be complementary matched to the template, by obtaining crystallographic data of a protein template. Particularly, positively and negatively charged amino acids can be counted and matched by an oppositely charged monomer. For hydrophobic amino acids, isoleucin, leucin, and valine amino acids are counted. Since not all hydrophobic amino acids are exposed, the hydrophobic amino acid and hydrophobic monomer ratio can be determined experimentally by varying ratios from 1:1 to 1:10.

Molecular imprinting of West Nile antibodies with physiological pH matching

An inkjet printing method, system, and computer-usable tangible storage device to print cells and biomaterials for three-dimensional cellular scaffolds and engineered skin grafts are disclosed. The process simultaneously deposits living cells, nutrients, growth factors, therapeutic drugs along with biomaterial scaffolds at the right time and location. This technology can also be used for the microvasculature fabrication using appropriate human microvascular endothelial cells and fibrin to form the microvasculature. When printing human microvascular endothelial cells in conjunction with the fibrin, the cells aligned themselves inside the channels and proliferated to form confluent linings. The 3D tubular structure was also found in the printed patterns. Simultaneously printing biological materials to form a three-dimensional cellular scaffold promotes human microvascular endothelial cell proliferation and microvasculature formation.

Tissue engineering device and construction of vascularized dermis

Tissue engineered constructs and methods for fabricating the disclosed constructs are provided. Some of the disclosed tissue engineered constructs are designed to fill a void in the body due to surgical resection, for example from mastectomy or lumpectomy, wounds and the like. Some disclosed constructs comprise one or more projections designed to mimic the appearance of a structural feature when implanted into a host.

Tissue engineered devices and methods for making same

An apparatus, system, and method for magnetic separation of cells are disclosed. By combining inkjet printing technology and magnetic labeling of cells, accurate cell counts are obtained using an optical microscope. Mouse CD4+ lymphocytes are attached to micron sized magnetic beads and printed through a modified, commercial inkjet printer. The labeled cells are then attached to a glass slide covering a permanent magnet. Cell counts can be obtained by use of regular and inverted optical microscopes and imaging software. The magnetically-labeled beads are collected for evaluation on a modified polymer coupon that is placed in front of a permanent magnet and the unlabeled cells fall into an excess container. Flow cytometry results verify the presence of the CD4+ protein on the LBRM-33 lymphocytes membrane. Protein-specific attachment of magnetic microspheres to the lymphocytes is utilized for sorting CD4+ lymphocytes.
