The present disclosure relates to a process for producing one or more carbon fiber precursor fibers, particularly by spinning a polymer solution, wherein the polymer has a polydispersity (PDI) of less than or equal to 2, in a coagulation bath with a jet stretch of about 5 to about 60. The one or more carbon fiber precursor fibers produced may be used for producing carbon fiber, typically carbon fiber used in manufacturing composite materials.

A spinneret assembly for spinning polymeric fibers, including: (a) a cap provided with an inlet port and a flared lower surface that flares outwardly from the inlet port in the direction of flow; (b) a spinneret having numerous spinning flow channels through its thickness; (c) a filter freely resting on the spinneret; and (d) a flow guide with a tapered geometry mounted in a cavity defined by the cap and the spinneret. The flow guide has an apex facing the inlet port, a base facing the filter, and one or more side surfaces tapering up to the apex. The present disclosure relates generally to carbon fibers having high tensile strength and modulus of elasticity, as well as a process for the manufacture of such carbon fiber. The process comprises spinning a polymer/solvent solution into a solvent/water bath in the range of 78%-85% solvent, thereby producing a dense fiber structure, and subsequently carbonizing the polymer precursor fiber at a lower than typical carbonization temperature to form carbon fibers.

Provided herewith is a process for improving tensile strength of precursor PAN fiber during the spinning stage in the manufacturing process. According to the process of the present invention, precursor fiber is made denser as it enters each wash bath. This progressive densification approach is useful for all PAN precursor bath draw/wash processes where a need for careful control of fiber network density and structure is required for improved carbon fiber properties.
