A processor of an application server layer detects a degree of a change in a workload in an input/output stream received through a network from one or more user devices. The processor determines a degree range, from a plurality of preset degree ranges, that the degree of the change in the workload is within. The processor determines a distribution strategy, from among a plurality of distribution strategies, to distribute the workload across one or more of a plurality of solid state devices (SSDs) in a performance cache tier of a centralized multi-tier storage pool, based on the determined degree range. The processor distributes the workload across the one or more of the plurality of solid state devices based on the determined distribution strategy.

A priority restore agent in a data storage system generates a priority restore data set for a client computer system or device by identifying a set of active data sets and/or a set of key data sets within client system data generated by the client computer system. The priority restore agent looks at or processes file system attributes for the client system data and compares these attributes with predefined restore parameters. The restore parameters may indicate that any file that has been accessed, modified, or created within a particular period of time be included in the priority restore data set. The key data sets may be identified in a set of automated restore rules. A data protection application within the data storage system can restore data in the priority restore data set onto the client computer system after a disaster or system crash.

An exemplary storage system for storing data from a host system and emulating a storage tape device is presented. In one example, the storage system includes a compression device configured to associate with a controller of a plurality of storage devices. The compression device is adapted to receive a sequence of data to be stored, divide the sequence of data into two or more blocks, and compress at least two of the two or more blocks in parallel. The system may further create an index associated with the blocks of data to output the data as a continuous stream of data. The compression device may further include dual or multiple ports.

A back up storage device () that backs up non-compressed data during a backup window period and then later after the backup window period is over and the device () is idle, it retrieves, compresses and then re-stores the data to reclaim space on the storage medium of the device (). During operation, a duty cycle having a backup window period and an idle period is defined. When the back up window starts, data is down-loaded and stored on the device () in non-compressed form. When the idle period begins, the non-compressed data is retrieved, compressed and then re-stored on the device () to reclaim space on the storage medium of the device (). In one embodiment of the invention, the back up storage device () is an emulated tape drive () that uses a software compression algorithm to compress the data stored in the device ().

A method of connecting and operating three or more devices to an IDE bus under the conditions that: (1) no more than two IDE devices may be active at any given time on the same IDE bus, and (2) cable/trace lengths for the IDE bus may not exceed the limits set forth in the IDE bus standard. The IDE devices are configured for cable select connected to the IDE bus, wherein no more than two of the IDE devices are powered on at any given. Further, those IDE devices which are powered on at a give time, have the appropriate logic level asserted on CSEL line so that only one IDE device powered on at any time is a 'Master' device, and only one IDE device powered on is a 'Slave'.

A digital data storage unit, such as tape library, has a multiplicity of storage media slots, each storage media slot for receiving a storage media unit, a plurality of storage media units loaded in particular ones of the storage media slots, a plurality of data transfer devices for writing data to and reading data from the storage media units, a plurality of data transfer device interfaces corresponding to the plurality of the data transfer devices, each data transfer device interface configured for transferring data between a corresponding data transfer device and a host computing environment, a loader mechanism for selectively moving a storage media unit between a storage media slot and one of the plurality of data storage drives, and a storage unit controller connected to the loader mechanism and to the data transfer device interfaces, wherein the storage unit controller is configured for connection to the host computing environment to receive and decode one or more host commands sent by the host computing environment at the storage unit controller, and for controlling the loader mechanism for selectively moving storage media units from the storage media slot locations to the data transfer devices for data transfer in response to host commands.

A process/method for controlling a digital data storage unit including a multiplicity of storage media slots for receiving media storage units, a plurality of media storage units loaded in some of the storage media slots, a plurality of data storage drives each having a unique drive address, a loader mechanism for selectively moving a media storage unit between a storage media slot and one of the plurality of data storage drives, and a storage unit controller connected to at least one host computer. One or more of the data storage drives are reserved as spare data storage drives wherein the spare data storage drives are masked from the host computer such the spare data storage drives are not directly accessible by the host computer. The storage unit controller receives and decodes host commands including a source address corresponding to a storage media slot location, and a destination address corresponding to a data storage drive specified by the host computer. The controller determines if the specified data storage drive is available, wherein if the specified data storage drive is not available, the controller performs failover processing by using a spare data storage drive in place of the specified data storage drive.

A system backs up computer files to a remote site via modem, LAN, WAN, or other network device 16. Files of a user computer that are found in a common library at the remote site initially are not copied to the remote site, whereas files not in the library are copied to the remote site and potentially automatically added to the library when a sufficient number of computers contain the files. Then, periodically or continuously if the user is online via the modem, the user computer determines which blocks have been changed, and the user computer transmits only changed blocks to the remote site. The blocks are gathered in 'chunk' files, and when a chunk file reaches a predetermined size, it is transmitted to the remote site for updating the back up version of the respective file. The process then resumes identifying changed blocks. In addition to flagging the changed block for transfer, the process resynchronizes the local data file with the backed up version using a two-step comparison, first comparing the first two characters in the block with a pre-stored character set, and then, if the first comparison results in a match, comparing a digital signature of the changed block with a pre-stored signature. If either comparison results in a mismatch, the test is repeated using, as the first byte of the test block, the next byte in the sequence. Novel encryption procedures are also disclosed.

System and method for backing up computer files over a wide area

A portable computer back up system copies user-selected files for back up as the computer is being used, and when the computer senses a network connection and the network is relatively available, the blocks of the files to be backed up are interleaved with, e.g., metadata and transmitted to a remote facility via the network. The back up system suspends the backing up of files if a disk space limit is reached, transmits any copied files when the network is available, deleting the back up copies of the files from disk, and then resumes copying files for back up. Also, each time the portable computer is connected to a network, it determines what other devices are on the network, and if the computer recognizes the network configuration, the computer reconfigures its settings as appropriate for, e.g., printing to the printer that happens to be connected to the particular network to which the portable computer is connected at the time.

A Web advertising measurement system that correlates the number of impressions of Web advertisements with post-impression transactional activity to measure the effectiveness of the advertisements. When a user clicks on a banner advertisement, an impression is established and the user's identification is recorded. Then, when the user undertakes post-impression transactional activity such as downloading software related to the advertisement, ordering products and services related to the advertisement, and so on, the transactional activity along with the user's identification is recorded. Based on the user identifications, the number of impressions associated with the advertisements are correlated to the post-impression transactional activity as a measure of effectiveness of each advertisement.
